How has everyone started? I must sAy I am at the point that I can maintain at work, but at home I have no energy to do anything. I'm sure it's individual, but what do the docs start us out doing? Ds in near future.

I can only answer for myself. Before my surgery, I was diagnosed with a heart problem, and at my weight, my doctor would not allow me to do any cardio at all besides walking 100ft or less at a time. I found the best exercise I could do was walking in a pool at the fitness center.

After surgery(within a couple hours) they will get you up and have you walking the halls. My first time I was a bit shaky, but on the second day I felt like I could walk a mile. In reality I was walking maybe 200 ft, then back to my room.

The first week or so home, I walked to the mailbox and back, and as I gained strength back I walked farther. Now I walk for 15 minutes or so at a time, either walking the halls of my apt blg or doing the treadmill.

Thanks for the info, how far out are you? How much have you lost, what is your goal?

I am about 7 weeks out. Started at 427, shooting for somewhere around 200. I don't know if that is a reasonable goal. When I used run 7 miles a day, the lowest I ever got as an adult was 180.  Those days are long gone.

You start out just walking.  You cannot lift/push/pull more than 8lbs for 8 weeks, so walking is your best friend (and all I had energy to do as I recovered).  If you've not gotten a blood panel yet, get a good baseline.  If you're not taking any vitamins, start with a good multi, and some extra B and D vitamins to get you in a decent place before your surgery.

I agree with Val - walking is all you'll do for the first couple of months.  And really do walk as much as you can right after surgery because it will make your recovery go so much better.  It was easy while I was still at home, but was harder to do once I went back to work.  I had to set a timer and make myself get up from my desk three times a day and either walk around the building or through the warehouse if it was cold.  I downloaded a pedometer app for my phone so I could do a consistent amount every day.  If no one was around I would swing my arms a lot to start getting them working too.  Once the doctor cleared me I started added some light exercises with my legs and arms - squats, hamstring curls, working arms with small weights.

Just remember to start slowly and do not overdo it - your insides need a lot of time to heal, and you don't want to get a hernia!

Good luck!
