Congratulations and good luck on your journey!

I was self pay for my RNY to DS revision with Dr. Keshishian in Dec 2010. The first 6-7 weeks were rough but it's all a memory now. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Teachmid,  I am soooooo afraid of the pain.  Let me ask, is it possible to take care of yourself by week two?  I mean can you go to the bathroom without assistance or getting in and out of bed.

What did they give you for pain management?

I am a big baby when it comes to pain! I was in the hospital for 5 days then moved to a hotel for 2 then visited family. By day 7 I needed very little assistance. We flew home after about 10 days and hubby went back to work and I was totally on my own.

Were you a open Teachmid?  and how did you do being on your own, was it really difficult or were you able to make out ok?   What kind of pain meds were you on and for how long?

I had an open revision. Had a feeding tube for 6weeks then took it out myself after talking with Dr. K on the phone.

I was pretty much off everything but ibuprofen after my trip home. I went back to work full time at 5 weeks. That was really hard and could have used another week or so.

A feeding tube????  OMG  What does that mean?  Did you not have any food by mouth for that 6 weeks?

Did you lose a lot of weight initially being on a feeding tube.  How much weight have you lost total?

I had 2 drains and a feeding tube afterwards. Dr. K took out the drains after about 10 days out. The feeding tube is basically protection against dehydration. Dr. K does it routinely for revision,

The first two weeks I used it to supplement with fluids and protein while I ate and drank. After that I didn't need it at all. Others have needed it much longer. It's really no big deal.

Just saw the second part of your question: in the hospital I was on a morphine PCA pump plus toradol until the last 24hrs when I was switched to Percocet. I went home on Tylenol #3 and ibuprofen.

I had a hernia repair and tummy tuck last summer and spent about a week on lortab. Had a breast lift 4 weeks ago. Started on Percocet but switched to lortab. Lortab seems to work well for me.

Hi Lee,

I had an RNY in 2005 and am having a revision to the DS on March 19th. I am nervous about the pain myself but have learned so much  on this site from the people who have had this surgery. After doing tons of research and talking with my surgeon I was convinced that the only surgery I wanted was the DS. There are so many issues with the RNY. My surgeon also believes that the DS is the best surgery out there. It has the best stats for long term results.

Its difficult to put my mind in a place knowing that I'm going to have to go thru the pain all over again but I am trying really hard to look beyond the surgery and the recovery time. I see all the great results from people on this site and friends who have had the surgery. I have yet to see any with regrets. I want those same results. I am tired of being overweight, tired and in pain all the time. My knees hurt, my hip hurts, my back hurts- you get the picture. So I am willing to go thru it again for a life time of positive results this time.

Keep every one posted on your journey.

Sharon

Hi Sharon

You are right and I need to stop thinking about the pain and concentrate on the improved health and on the smaller clothing size, the sense of freedom that being thin brings and that I love so much and the overall feeling of good health.

I wish you much success with your surgery in March and hope we both are able to lose the weight and keep it off with the DS.
