Evil band to ds?

I have had a evil band for 6 years and have had all the common negative side effects, vomiting, foods getting stuck, and have only lost 50 of the 100 pounds I need to lose. I'm looking into a revision and was strongly considering the ds because of the long term success, and because I have a family history of diabetes. I have had two doctors tell me RNY was the way to go because people after ds have complications like chronic diarrhea and because they didn't think it was nessary I want this to be my LAST weight loss surgery. Had anyone had the ds as a revision with only 50 pounds to lose? Any advice is appreciated.

DS on 01/24/13

I am a recent band to DS revision. I have lost more with the DS  in 30 days than I did with my crapband in 6 years. Friend me if you'd like...you can read my blog. I am happy so far with this decision. I did not go with the RNY because I didn't want to dump...I vomited for more than 3 years....I didn't want to do it anymore.

I also had the dreaded crapband...actually I had 2 since the first one self destructed.  I had the DS because I originally chose the band to be safe.  I wanted DS to be my LAST surgery and I have never looked back!  It was the best decision ever!  I had 100 lbs to lose because I lost 75 lbs with the band and ended up gaining 120lbs due to the second one being placed the wrong way.  DS SAVED my life and changed everything and really gave me a second chance at life.  It's the best decision I've ever made.

Good Luck!

I had the band out and the DS done in December and am very pleased with the DS thus far. No chronic diarrhea and my guts are even still in the "getting adjusted to everything" stage.

As far I as the 50 lbs that you have left to lose, one of the most helpful things about the DS is the maintenance of weightloss .I found with the band it was very difficult to maintain what weight I did lose. The malabsorbtion helps with the maintenance. I have 100 lbs to lose, but if I had 50lbs left to lose and knew I needed help to maintain it I would've still done the DS

I have done my research and really think this is the surgery for me. My hesitation is tat two doctors tod me they don't recommend it because of chronc diarrhea and that is NOT something I want to deal with, my boyfriend has chrons disease so we have enough diarrhea in my house lol My other hesitation is wondering if with only 50 pounds to lose if I have a chance of losing too much? Thank you everyone for the support and sharing your story's

Your insurance may not pay since your BMI isn't high enough.

At 7months out, I don't have chronic diarrhea, but I eat pretty carefully.  Lots of protein, all my vitamins and all my water.  You have to have a certain amount of self-discipline with the DS, but I think that's true with any WLS, no?

My insurance will not pay for the surgery so im going to self pay and i'm traveling to Mexico just as I did for my first surgery. I agree about any WLS requiring self discipline. What are the things you have to be most disciplined about?

Chronic diarrhea is NOT normal after the DS. The doctors who told you that don't know what they;re talking about, and probably are not capable of doing a DS. Find yourself a better surgeon. (*grin*)

I too had the evil Crap-Band and suffered for 2 years.  I am 4 years out from my revision and I am so happy that I made the DS choice!  I lost about 90 lbs initally, and have gained back only about 5-10 (I go up and down) over the past 4 years (I am not always the best at following the plan.)  But when I eat the way I am supposed to (protein first) I can usually eat as much as I want and not gain anything (fat and calories don't count for us anymore.)

Nothing is perfect and I do have issues, like smelly gas and bloating when I eat what I'm not supposed to, but for the most part I live a normal life.  I don't have chronic diarrhea (unless if I am reckless with my eating) so basically I control my fate.  The one issue I do have are the bathroom smells, but they are not as bad when you eat right and they seem to get better with time.  And some people don't even have this issue.

In the beginning it may take a few months to see what bothers you, but after that you have the power.  I am one of the unlucky folks who can not eat bread, pasta or wheat products.  I can eat potatoes and rice but only in small amounts so I stick to the protein.  That's probably how I have been able to maintain so well, bread will put weight on you faster than anything else.  But man I miss a sandwich or a bowl of pasta, so there is a transition, but its worth it to have a life again.

Talk to your doctor and discuss what is a good common channel length for you.  You should talk to your doc about any these concerns, that's his job.  This is a major surgery and you need ALL the facts when you go into it.  That will make you feel better about your decision.

I will say 4 years out, I've maintained very easily.  I wear a size 8-10, I no longer have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or sleep apnea and the only medication I take everyday are my vitamins.  I can walk for miles, ride my bike with my kids and do almost any physical activity I choose and it feels amazing!

That band SUCKS!  I feel your pain.  If you decide the DS is right for you, there are many former Crap-Banders here and we are doing just fine!

Good Luck!
