Hi Lisa,

I don't have my surgery until Wednesday but when Dr's office did my FMLA paperwork, they put 6 weeks because I do 12 hour shifts as you do.  I didn't argue figuring It was better to have my employer prepared for worst case.   Depending on recovery, there is always the option of going back sooner and/or doing shorter work days/weeks.  I hope to be back by the 4 week mark (cross fingers) but the cushion is there if I need it.  Good Luck!

I went back to work at 2 weeks to a desk job...working 10+hours/day and did fine, but I am a notoriously fast healer.  I had 2 c-sections and was up cleaning my house/vacuuming in a week after each one.  I would take it slow & see how your healing goes.

Lisa, even if it's done lap and the outside is healed by the end of two weeks, your INSIDES will not be. Cutting your intestines and rearranging them is MAJOR surgery. I wouldn't have been able to go back to work at 2 weeks even if I had lived AT the hospital, much less over an hour from medical care.

I'd take a minimum of 6 and maybe 8 off.

Liz

I'm now two months out - 2 weeks is probably not going to be long enough for the long shifts you work.  You're going to be so tired and your body is still doing a lot of healing.  Plus you are adjusting to lots of new dietary concerns.  Please give yourself more time.

Thank you all for your responses - it has definitely given me something to think about, maybe I'll see what I can do about working from home. I think I am just trying to think positive and maybe not as realistically as i should be.

Hi I am from Anchorage and have quite a few family and friends that work on the "slope" .  I think you need more time, and keep in mind if anything serious happens they will have to (more than likely) fly you to Anchorage (Providence?) to take care of any medicalproblems.  I thought two weeks as well, but from support groups and this forum I realized I should give myself more time... subsequently I delayed my DS until May to ensure I had enough time.
