Bad lab levels HELP ME PLEASE...
Yea I here ya B,
I have a moderate period once every 6-8 months lol. Geez when will I be done with menapause? Oh well nonetheless something went crazy and I believe it was a combination of things which all the doctors were no****ching or listening to me. I kept telling them HELLOO I am on the low side of normal and I do mean the low side but they did not see that as a problem. Maybe not for a normal personal without malabsorption but for me yes its a problem. Wow now they can see that.
Oh well it is what it is. I have to get these levels up now. I will drink a freaking protein shake every waking hour of the day if I have to. I just made a crap load of deviled eggs to snack on in between the shakes and I am going to Vitamin Shoppe to pick up some egg white protien shake powder so I can have something different and hopefully wont start gagging at the sight of protien shake mix lol like I used to do early out from surgery.

Well to tell you the truth according to me and my WLS friends -
- See if you can get hold of some "geritol" (old medicine) - great to get iron levels up.... that will improve protein and hemoglobin
- When eating a meal - eat your protein first, veggies second.... carbs if you have any room left to eat
- Don't take meds/supplements with calcium supplements - calcium blocks absorption of everything else
- a glass of red wine during those "times of the month" won't hurt
B
B I wish I could do the wine but it dehydrates me so bad. Geritol OMG I haven't heard that name in years lol. I do the heme from vitalady, and I take all my medications at night 4-6 hours away from all vitamins. All other vitamins I take every 2 hours through the day to maximise absorption.
My routine has been tweeked by Michelle (vitalady) and has worked well. But the doctors forget that I do not make blood like normal ppl and last Feb I lost 2 units of blood when I blew a angioseal after a cardiac cath. Now with that said the surgeon tells me I will be ok because I bled inside and would reabsorp my own blood. Really REALLY.
I fear that if my husband or children are not there to speak up for me someday they will let me die.

Scary. Definitely hit the protein hard. As long as you are capable of oral intake, you should be able to get yourself back on track without intervention. I would even consider a digestive enzyme supplement for a short period of time with meals to help with absorption.
Definitely lots of protein shakes, as Gina mentioned.
Albumin has a half life of 20 days, so there really is no good in retesting sooner than 3 weeks from now. You can, on the other hand, test prealbumin within the next week to see if your improvements are enough. If you are still low on prealbumin, you need to be more aggressive.
Out of curiousity, when was your albumin tested? Like, day one in the ER? Couple days later? Did you have an infection of any sort -- high WBCs? Were you on IV fluids? Certain things can make your albumin appear lower than it actually is.
I had all those levels drawn Feb 11 and I do not have the results because Dr. Greenbaum hasn't mailed them to me yet. I called today to have them sent per fax to the hematologist asap. I am not sure what all my other levels were I was so sick and weak I was only hearing half of what so many different doctors and nurses were saying.
The biggest concern right at this moment is my heart. I didn't have enough hemoglobin to provide oxygen to heart muscle and I almost had a massive coronary. The hematologist is trying to address all my issues but the iron and hemoglobin are firt on list then protein then the others. Something went wrong because I was taking a very good routine of vitamins from vitalady and have had perfect levels till last 9 months when I noticed I was running on the low side of things. I would point this out to my PCP and she said your fine. Wow all I needed was a crisis and here it is now I am in trouble.

Kayla, I forgot to tell ya I lost 2 units of blood last Feb and because I bled within myself, they saw no reason to give me any blood also last week Quest disgnostic took and I repeat took 14 tubes of blood from me then after no period for 6 months I decided to have one for 5 days. So I believe its a lot of events that just came to a head and I told the doctors this was gonna happen.
Hence forth, this is why we can't give blood and if we loose blood it needs replaced. What in Gods name do I have to do to convince these doctors here. I have even provided them with the research to back this up.
Carla
P.S. I guess prayers would be appreciated at this point and I will have to work as hard as I can to get my levels up hopefully this hematologist will be an answer.

Sounds like you need a local Doctor. I had a hemoglobin of 7 (due to heavy periods 18 yrs ago) and had to take massive doses of iron - it took 6 months to come up to 14 where it belongs.
Hope this helps.
