Trouble with liquids but not food?
I am one month post op. I am eating 60+ protein per day. I am having a HARD time keeping liquids down. When I SIP water, after about an hour I feel like I am going to belch and the water just comes up. Not the gut wrenching vomitting. but it just flows back out....
My doctor said she thought it was muscle spasms. So she gave me a prescription. It is $480 and not covered by insurance. Food stays down just fine.
I am not dehydrated. ONLY because I am going to infusion lab 3 times per week for 4 bags of fluids. (which is getting old).
Has anyone else dealt with this? I can't keep protein shakes, water, gatorade, nothing down....
thanks
michelle
I had a bit of the same trouble with backing up fluids, early out. My solution was to drink standing up. When I was sitting at the table or sitting any where, my stomach was bent with pressure from my rib age. Standing the stomach was able to empty comfortably with fluids. Try warm drinks. They went down easier for me. 6 weeks out the internal healing is done. Most people find the 5th week is more comfortable. Internal swelling is taking up some tummy room, but not for long. Every week gets better and better. I think the early months are the most difficult to adjust to. 6 months out was fine for me. Now at 19 months, I don't need to sip any more, gulping is normal as it used to be. Hydration is still a priority, no matter how far out you are. Be sure not to drink when you eat. There is no room for both. Don't dilute stomach acids, they need to be full strength to aide digestion. You need all the room you have to get in all your protein. Fluids would rush the food out of the stomach, leaving you hungry sooner. A sip or 2 to help swallowing would be fine. Swallowed air with eating or drinking tend to bubble up and out early on.
I am VSG>DS, but when I had my VSG, I had a hard time with liquids for the first six weeks or so. As Sandra suggests, whether it was liquid or food, if I ever felt nauseous or felt like something was stuck or going to come back up, yes, the trick is to immediately improve your posture. Stand up, shoulders back, like a string is come up through your head and pulling you length-wise.
