Considering DS as a revision option, was RNY in 2005
Has anyone considered and went ahead and had a revision with DS option (previously being a RNY).
Just wondering what the highlights, lowlights and issues you encountered during your journey.
I had my first meeting with my physician and wanted to get all the information i could when i meet them again in March.
Thanks !
I am having surgery next Tuesday. A revision from a RNY to a DS. I could not find many discussions about this particular procedure. Mostly lap bands to RNY in the revision forum so I began reading the profiles of the people who had DS surgeries and found revisions from RNY to DS. Most of them are positive and lost weight as if they had not even had the RNY. I did see some issues with malnutrition etc. I hope it helps and I hope someone who has been through it will reply. I am getting a little ansy. My uncle passed away today out of the blue. Most likely from his diabetes. I know I have to do something.
Dr. Teel studied under Dr. Maguire and actually assisted with mine when he, Maguire and Anderson all worked in the same practice. I've read from some who have gone to him that he's extremely selective about who he'll do a DS on, talking some patients into VSG instead. He's newer, but learned from one of the best.

Welcome! There are a lot of us here that are RNY to DS revisions. Here is the list of experienced RNY to DS revision surgeons.
Dr. Keshishian, located in California
Dr. Rabkin, located in California
Dr. Stewart, located in Texas
Dr. Simper, located in Utah
Dr. Elariny, located in Virginia
Dr. Roslin, located in New York
Dr. Buchwald, located in Minnesota
Of course, the above doctors are in the United States
Dr. Baltasar, located in Spain
Dr. Marchesini, located in Brazil
Dr. Gagner in Canada and Dr. Greenbaum are also experienced surgeons, but please use caution, and RESEARCH!!!!!!!!!!!
This is THE most complicated revision and not just any surgeon can do it. This is the list that the DS community here supports for this kind of revision. I will say that others have gone to other surgeons. Some with good results and some with tragic results. This list is available for a reason. It is available to steer newbies looking into this kind of revision to the right surgeons. The surgeons that have done the most, have the most experience and have the least amount of complications. Think long and hard about going with anyone not on this list. Make sure you so intense research regarding the DS. Go to dsfacts.com to get lots of good information about the DS and post op life.
I will say that getting my revision was the best thing I have ever done for myself. The DS is FAR, FAR superior to any other WLS. I had a complication free recovery. That is not always the case, so make sure you look into all the possible complications and be prepared for them.
What surgeon are you seeing? Chances are, if he/she does not do the DS, he/she will try and steer you towards a ERNY. DO NOT GO THERE! It is the worst of both worlds. Go to a surgeon that will do a TRUE RNY to DS revision. A TRUE revision includes taking down your pouch and reattaching it to your remnant stomach and then forming the sleeve stomach. Then they will reroute the intestines for increased malabsorption. Anything other than this is NOT a true revision.
RNY to DS Revision 4/29/2011
Dr. Henry Buchwald
"Think twice.....Cut ONCE"
Your surgeon is NOT doing you a favor.
The ERNY (Distal RNY) combines the WORST of the RNY and the DS - a pouch with all its attendant problems, and severe malabsorption.
Consider that if you have the ERNY, you are unlikely to be able to get it revised again, both for insurance reasons and for medical reasons. THINK TWICE, CUT ONCE (or in your case, having already made one terrible mistake in your first surgery, THINK THREE TIMES, CUT TWICE).
Cancel for now...and either get it in writing that it IS a DS or find a new surgeon...one who does true RNY to DS revisions.
Duodenal Switch (Lap) 01-24-11 | Surgeon: Stephen Boyce | High weight: 250 in 2002 | Surgery weight: 203 | Lowest weight: 121 | Current weight: 135 | Goal weight: 135
Now that's more of what I'd expect from Dr Teel. He and his mentor Dr. Maguire were more apt to do ERNY instead of RNY to DS revisions. Go back up to the list of revision surgeons a few posts up for the docs who are known to do real revisions.
