Increasing fat intake to lose weight?

I had ds surgery day before thnxgiving 2012. I have lost 40.8 lbs but was at a standstill until I added fat and subtracted carbs. Up until adding fat, was hungry all the time. My dr  wants me on low fat, low carb, hi protein, but I can't handle that. I have 80 lbs to go. Will I be able to lose rest of weight w/ high fat + hi protein?

Absolutely!  As DSers, we only absorb about 20% of the fat we consume, so you may wind up constipated if you don't get ENOUGH fat.  So, in our world, absolutely everything is low fat.

I'm sorry that your surgeon is giving you bad DS advice. You should absolutely be eating a high protein, high fat, and low carb diet with the DS. For example, let's say you should, as a "normal" person, be consuming 40 g of fat a day. Because of the way the post-op DSer absorbs only 20% of the fat they consume, you should consume about 200 g of fat to get the 40 g needed. I hope this helps.

Can you tell me what fatty foods you're eating.  I gained weight since my last visit and am interested in any and all strategies to change this pattern. Thanks in advance.

Think whole foods like cheese and marbled meats with shameless use of butter, gravy, dressings and sauces. Sour cream, cream cheese, ricotta cheese, guacamole, mayo -- all the things that are high in protein that we were pre-programmed to avoid because of the fat content.

I'm eating all of the things she mentioned, though I eat my beef ground. I also eat all or part of an avocado if hungry between meals..I've been averaging 2 lg avocados per day. Today mixed my AM protein drink with half n half instead of milk. I was down another .8 llb this am and 1lb Sunday.

Monday dropped another 1.4 lbs this am. It just doesn't seem possible to eat this much & lose weight. It seems that the lower my carbs  & higher the fat, the more i lose. And no hollow diet feeling.

Fat is free food.  Not my words, they came from Dr. Hess.  And it's common for us to get the wrong diet advice.  They are so used to preaching low fat they find it impossible to change.

Perfect DS breakfast.  3 eggs with cheese, fried in butter.  1/2 pound of bacon.  Enjoy!

And whatever you do, don't eat stuff that's been made artificially low- or no-fat. When they take the fat out, they replace it with...carbs!
