Your decision for DS ?
Hey guys :) I was wondering what helped you in your decision to choose DS over the other procedures. And are you happy with your decision ?? Thanks !!! Maureen
I've never even heard of your surgeon. Are you sure you had DS and not ERNY?
Either way, I'd be voicing your troubles to him to see what the problem is. You've only had it a month though. Some people take several weeks for it to kick in and start rolling. My biggest concern is what were the recommendations given to you about diet and supplements? I want to make sure this new DS surgeon understands our needs. Even the more seasoned ones know enough to get us started, but not long-term.

You had your surgery all of 1 month ago. You have hit a stall, which everyone hits at this point in time - there is physiology for this, which I won't get into here, but bottom line, if hitting a stall at one month post-op has "ruined your happiness", perhaps you were not emotionally prepared for the rollercoaster ride that bariatric surgery causes.
You are going to have good days and bad days. You will stall when you are doing everything right, and then lose when you least expect it. But to post to someone looking into wls, trying to get accurate information about the DS, that your life is ruined just because you hit a stall is not helpful to anyone.
BTW, I reviewed your other posts, and you "forget" to take your synthroid for 2 weeks...and then wonder why you haven't lost weight. Well, there is the possibility that it's the standard stall that everyone has, OR it could be because your forgetfulness has caught up with you and you are hypopthyroid. Before you blame the DS for your problems, get back on your meds and see if that helps. Might help your frame of mind, too - hypothroidism can cause depression, among many other symptoms.
And for the future, I hope you will learn to be more faithful about taking meds and esp vitamins and minerals, because if you don't, with the DS, you will find yourself with serious nutritional deficiencies. Now is the time to create a schedule for yourself and make this a regular part of your life. It gets easier once you establish a routine.
I hope your stall will end soon and you will start to love your DS like most of us do, and that you will realize that your life has not been ruined. Just don't expect the DS, or weight loss, to resolve every problem in your life, or create happiness where none exists. There is no operation for that.

Hi Maureen,
I chose the Ds because I wanted the best chance I could get to keep the weight off. I keep reading about all these people having more surgeries down the road and I wanted to make sure I only had one. I am only about 2 months out the first couple of months were a bit tough to get use to and I'm still not eating much but getting in all my vitamins. My surgery went well no issues at all. I like the fact that I have my own stomach and should I need to I can take nsaids down the line. Would I do it again yes, I just wish I would of done it when I was younger. If you have not already checked it out check out dsfacts.com.
Best of luck,

I was already sleeved so it was the obvious next step. I'm very happy with it, I had a text book recovery and am a little over 6 months out and still doing great. The diet post DS is awesome and am so happy I don't have to do low fat (I have lots of protein, cheese and heavy cream).
My knee pain has pretty much gone away (I think I was headed for a knee replacement , which may well still happen, but I'm now hoping not for another 20 years). I am very diligent with my vites though. I'm on the Vitalady program and don't skip them (I tweak it as per my labs). I also aim for 120g + of protein. It's an expensive life post DS but something I was prepared for.

I my DS
Knowing what I knew about myself and my body's resistance to each and every effort (no matter how extreme) to lose weight, I knew that it was much more than just eating less, for I was living on next to nothing most of the time, desperately trying to lose weight. On Weigh****chers, it took me 1.5 years to lose a mere 21 lbs. The DS and the metabolic changes just made sense to what my body needed, and I was right, and I'm so happy I did it. I'm 7 years post op and I feel great.

What I havent seen, is anyone who was unhappy with the DS because they werent losing. Stalls? Maybe. And some lose more quickly than others. But never, NEVER, have I heard of anyone who didnt lose with the DS.
My advice is to talk to people who are years out to get the real deal about all procedures. From what I've seen, many RNYers are struggling with regain, reactive hypoglycemia, or looking to revise. Sleevers are obsessively counting calories and exercise minutes.
As for me, I'm 2 1/2 years out (which isn't that long in the scheme of things, I know) and I've been stablized well below my goal weight for over a year. I am no longer on any meds for diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. I wear a size 8 ****asional 6's) and I enjoy eating. I make sure I drink my protein coffee each day and take my supplements, and I try to eat protein first and stay away from carbs (although I'm not always so good at that). I weigh myself a couple of times a week and this morning I weighed 128.5.
I had some major buyer's remorse in my first few months too; but now I can confidently say that I love my DS.
