Who trained your Nutritionist about the DS?  Unless it is the one that Major Mom trained I would bet that she knows next to nothing about the DS.  What advice have you been given?

My NUT told me I needed 78 g of protein, to eat low fat, not to drink with meals, not to take NSAIDs, and if I had followed THAT advice I probably would be dead.

So just a heads up.  Most of us with the DS don't have a good history with NUTs post-op advice.  You are lucky you have this forum.  I worry about people who have the DS and don't have access to people who know how to live with it.  They are suffering needlessly.

My nutrionist advised 120g however she did say I may not be able to get it down the first week. She just said to try my best.

When I had surgery, my goal was the 30-60-90 rule---30 grams by 30 days, 60 grams by 60 says, and so on. This was easily do-able, with NO protein shakes. Your body has enough protein stored to carry you for 6 weeks or so.

My mom and sister had the DS. I just like to know what other people have experienced.

I'm with you.  I could barely get my fluids in at all for the first few weeks. I'm barely above that now. I'm 5 weeks out and having a hard time keeping anything down.  My first dr. appointment post-surgery is this Thursday, so I'll be asking questions.  Protein powder drinks have only made me throw up.  So, I'm focusing on water intake.

Hi,   just happened on your post and noticed you are having a hard time keeping anything down.  I had the same experience and struggled for weeks.  I then discovered that I was lactose intolerant.  I eliminated all milk, whey anything to do with dairy.  This improved things 100%.  It was only temporary and after a few weeks of recovery I was able to re-introduce dairy into my diet.  I used a vegetable based protein shake in the meantime.  Hope this helps.

I drink 1-2 protein coffees per day and I use  dymatize ISo 100 chocolate powder in it.

Right after my surgery I was choking down that liquids protonix stuff and trying to get in 30g of protein through that and then whatever food I ate was protein (not much).

Hi there!  Right after surgery you wont be eating anything right away so you'll need to figure out what works for you and what won't, everyone is different.

I have a problem with protein drinks and most bars, they give me pretty bad gas.  I find that I prefer to eat my protein.  I get 100 to 120 mgs a day through my food.  With the DS calories are not an issue so as long as I stick with protein first I am doing great.

Be careful with low sugar products they contain sugar subsitutes that can cause a major problem with gas and diahrea, this is why I stay away from them.  Read the ingredients, anything that is a "tol" like sorbitol or malitol is deadly!  (Atkins bars are the WORST, I was sick for 2 days!)  This is why I find a little natural sugar is my best bet.  A little natural sugar is much better for your body than that little package of chemicals, just stay with reason.
