Hi i read the posts here alot as I don't have the ds but am looking into revising to it I was just curious. I see alot of folks here post about what they are eating,stalls,etc..but i rarely see anyone post anything about exercise ...Are any of you who are in the weight loss phase actually working out? or are u relying soley on eating lots of fats and protein i.e. relying mainly on the tool to do the work.

I worked out for 30 years in the Army and it only messed up my back. When my surgeon said don't do heavy exercise for a year post-op, I took him at his word. So, I only walk and do leaning push-ups. YMMV (your mileage may vary).

Ewww, no.  I'm quickly bored with organized exercise.  That being said, though, as I lost weight, I became incredibly active for my own entertainment (still not working out - but doing fun things).  I've been compared to the Energizer bunny many times.

I don't like organized exercise either.  I just mosey around and do my thing.  Like Crocodile Dundee I go on walk about...

I despise exercise but I do it.  I swim in the summer and run in winter, spring and fall.  I walk year round.  I have three dogs to exercise.  Plus I do a lot of physical remodeling work as well.  And the more I exercise, the easier it is to maintain my weight.  And I hate saying that!  IF I can make myself run about 25 miles a week, I stay thin pretty effortlessly.  For me, the hardest part is the first step out the door.

I've had a similar go of it as others have mentioned.  I can honestly say that I did not put forth any planning of exercise for the first 4 years, I relied on the tool to do the work.  It was so nice to let go of many years of guilt related to working out.  Similar to what Val mentioned, as my weight dropped, my energy levels raised and I have just enjoyed typical daily activities, faster.  With that said, in the last few months I have noticed the dreaded bounce back 10 pounds.  So, for the last couple weeks I have made an effort to use our treadmill.  I simply cut out needless carbs and walked briskly for 2 miles every other day and dropped the first 5 pounds in the first week. The other 5 pounds are being a bit stubborn, but I'm confident that those will melt away again as well I up my protein and water and continue to avoid carbs.

I go through fits and spurts of heavy exercise, then just walking.  For most of my weight loss phase, I just walked or did light weights and elliptical at the gym and played a lot of golf (walking the course).

That being said, I trained for and ran a half marathon in 2010, then trained for and hiked 28 miles of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 2011.

I am just about 10 years out and maintaining is a bit easier when I have a normal exercise program.

Best wishes,

Sharon

I am looking into having the DS done soon, just the second (switch) portion of it. I exercise a lot now and am wondering how it will affect me after the surgery if i try to exercise. Will it hurt too badly to do something like the elliptical? I had the sleeve done in 2010 and couldnt run or do any up or down motion for months because my acid was so bad and i couldn't keep enough liquid in my stomach to stay hydrated to exercise. But since my stomach has restretched and i can drink normally, if they only operate on my instestines, I'm wondering if I'll be able to do cardio after. I know there will be a bit of downtime involved with healing, I'm just hoping it won't be months before I can get back on an arc trainer or elliptical. Any advice?

I was cleared to walk right away just not over due it.. I had the complete DS at one time.. My recovery was a cake walk.. I started just walking then I discovered swimming and fell in love! Then started adding jogging and other work outs..

I started swimming @ 5 months out pretty much everyday.. Or did some kind of excercise.. I believe it helped tone and drop inches.. I reached goal @ 1 year out.. I still swim a couple days a week but I'm also 37 weeks Prego.. Once I'm up going again I will do weights and swim to keep my muscle volume up:)
