Try alternative milks; almond, cocoanut, soy...

Or try cream or half-n-half.

I just wanted to say, if you haven't tried milk yet...I would HIGHLY recommend trying a small amount first!  I drank about 1/2 a cup the other day (not long before bed).  I had to wake up 3 times in the middle of the night to use the bathroom!  It wasn't a very fun night.

Lactose is milk sugar. Skim milk has more lactose than 2% of whole milk. Lactose is what a lot of people become intolerant of after surgery, so---the higher the fat content, the lower the lactose, the less likely you are to react to it. (This is why lots of folks who are lactose intolerant can eat cheese just fine---there's virtually no lactose in cheese, even when it's made from whole milk.)

I've been using only soy milk for the last few weeks in my protein shakes because it's really good extra protein - plus I'm having a slight issue with lactose.  But be very careful to look for soy or almond milk that is UNSWEETENED.  Most of it is full of sugars and sweeteners.

I cannot tolerate milk, soy milk or almond milk.  It is not just lactose but carbs I think, that bother me.  I can tolerate heavy cream so I use it to make diet hot chocolate and would add it to protein drinks if I drank them.

You need the fat anyway and there are no carbs and it is really yummy and filling.

Milk vs no milk and watching carbs vs no****ching carbs, is really dependent on where you are on your surgical recovery. When analyzing answers, look at surgery dates. Paying attention to carbs is most important early on when you are trying to lose weight. As you get to your goal, or want to slow down the weight loss, we usually start adding "good" carbs. Thus, you will get a wide variety of answers.

I was lactose intolerant for the first five-ish months. I am over a year out now, and drink milk (deep breath, CHOCOLATE milk) all the time. But I don't want to lose any more weight. Even far out from surgery, we all tolerate things a little differently.

I was always a whole milk drinker pre-op. Got home and the first thing I did was make a protein shake with whole milk...BOY was that ever a mistake. For about 6 months after surgery, I had to take lactaid pills to use cream/half & half/cheese/ or lactaid milk.

I am still, 2 years later, lactose intolerant of milk altho I can handle the cheese, cream or half & half without issue.

I despise alternative milks...they taste funky to me. And soy is not an alternative anyway. Thyroid issues.
