VSG --> DS

I am scheduled for Wednesday to revise my VSG to a DS.  Since I don't need to follow the liquid/puree diet immediately post-op since my stomach has long well healed, I was wondering what other issues I can immediately expect?  I was warned by my nutritionist about the gas and diarrhea, and all this Al Roker shart talk hasn't helped my anxiety about this.

I'm looking to hear from others what changes they experienced in terms of tolerance and foods that triggered the most problems.

First of all, Al Roker had RNY, so no comparing.

You may have diarrhea right after surgery, but with the help of Calcium Citrate, and some of the other vitamins and iron you will be taking, you should do fine after the initial trauma of the surgery.

Just stick to low carb and high protein foods.

Good Luck

Depending on how your OP is done, you may well have a 3 week soft foods diet.  If your surgeon uses a val-trac ring in your intestinal anastamosis, you will have food progression.  Find out for sure.

It's a learning process and we are all different.  Some can eat anything with no ill effects.  Others can't.  And early out having problems with X doesn't mean you will have problems 6 weeks later.  If you stick to protein foods, you will be fine.  One major change is learning that fat is your friend and pretty much a free food.  Forget all the low fat stuff.  It's probably safe to say that many if not most of us have some problems with cruciferous vegetables.  It's probably a good idea not to try those for a while.

I would probably try yogurt, cheese, and egg drop soup to start with and see what happens.  Maybe some protein shakes if you find one you can stand.  Take it slow and just make sure you get enough liquids.

Another major change is supplements.  I hope you have been given good advice because we do have serious malabsorbtion!

Surgery on any part of your intestines requires a gradual diet progression. Make sure to get specific instructions from your surgeon.

Best of luck with your surgery! The DS is the most effective bariatric surgery available, and it should make a big difference for you.
