Duodueum Switch....DS...not DI...told you I was losing my mind!!!!

I did have the duodenum switch. I had the gastric bypass in April and when they went in to fix the hiatial hernia for the 3rd time they changed the bypass to the DS.  I am not sure where I got the idea it was a DI switch except for the fact I haven't had much sleep and  feel terrible.,,,however I feel better today, thank God. The switch consisted of making my stomach into a small pouch and bypassing the majority of the small intestine,  I have been taking ADEK vitamins but I have not lost much weight since the surgery which isn't surprising as I have been eating so much food.  I am so afraid I have done permenant damage.  Please keep sending me responses as it is really helping. Thank you so very much for your support.

What you are describing is an ERNY, NOT a DS.  A DS consists of a Sleeve stomach and then the intestinal rerouting.  If the Dr made your stomach into a small pouch, you have a ERNY...which is different.

However, you do need to be on a lot of supplements.  ADEK vitamins will not have what you need in them.  Visit vitalady.com to see what she suggests for ERNY.

You did not have a duodenal switch The Duodenal Switch (DS) does not involve making the stomach into a pouch. The DS involves complete removal of a portion of the stomach and leaves behind a much smaller, normal functioning stomach.

The switch consisted of making my stomach into a small pouch and bypassing the majority of the small intestine,

You have a ERNY not a DS...

However your supplementation is similar to the DS according to this list compiled by vitalady:

I agree with the others, you likely have ERNY - which makes more sense with your surgeon not being a DS surgeon, let along a revision DS surgeon.  DSers have a fully functioning stomach, albeit smaller - no pouch.  I only hope he didn't do something crazy like  JIB or BPD.  It would be a great idea to do some extensive research to familiarize yourself on what is done with these procedures, then have a frank conversation with your surgeon about exactly what was done to you.  Once you know for absolute certainty, we can work from there.  Most people make their way to the DS after some extensive research, so we have some very knowledgeable people out here.

That being said, however you can still benefit from our nutritional practices.  Nutritionally, your needs are very similar, however your absorption of calories may be different, which is why you are not losing weight the same way.  You need high fat - but need to stick to beneficial fats.  You need to eat high protein, but may need to watch caloric intake.  You can get some of those practices from the RNY board.

I am so confused. As someone said I have not been educated on this and it happened so very fast. You are right, part of my stomach was removed and it looks like a small pouch but he did remove part of it...now I have to call the office and confirm this....be back later. Thanks again.

Get YOUR OWN COPY of your operative/surgical report!!!!!!

I posted this response in the other thread:

Can you type here EXACTLY what your operative report says??  I am curious about your revision to DS.......... Please elaborate with your operative report says.

You can get your operative report from the medical records department at the hospital where you had your gastric bypass revised to a DS.

This will help all of us LOTS to help YOU!!!!

Even if he removed part of it, if you do not have your pyloric valve, it's a pouch. A DS sleeve has both neeeded ends of the stomach. Part is removed but not the ends...just the large middle part.

Seriously, either go to the office or have them mail to your your operative report. You want it in writing, not just what they tell you over the phone that you might misunderstand.  Post here exactly what it says, and then we can do a lot more to help you. Until then, we're just shooting in the dark.

Key question for him....do you have a working plyoric valve?  That will state a major difference.
