i called my surgeon today because the bloating is sooo bad and although i am having some bm's i dont feel cleaned out. he told me to take 2 bottles of citrate of mag. i did and only went twice. his secretary said he wanted to do surgery to see if there is a kink or something blocking. this has been going on so long i just dont know what to do. im not in pain so i dont think it is a bowel obstruction. he did mention something could be narrowing where the bile goes>? he has seen this happen. im at the point now where i just want to be done with this it has been since july. chronic constipation and super hard distention of the abdomen. im so uncomfortable! he did mention that while he was in there he could legnthen my common channel. do i want this? im so afraid to gain the weight back but am so done with the malabsorptive issue. im on flagyl and was trying metamucil but it just made me more uncomfortable and didnt increase bowel movements.

Have you tried Miralax.  I think it really amazing stuff.  You might have to experiment for a while to find the perfect daily dosage for you.  By the way, I had a doc tell me that a daily maintenance dose of Miralax is perfectly fine.

What malabsoptive issues do you have?

Just an added thought, when I stopped eating eggs, my bloating greatly improved.

Hi Michele: I have not had my DS yet, but when I have had constipation problems, someone told me to mix Milk of Magnesia with prune juice.  It really works! But be prepared with mattress protection, 'cause you will have uncontrollable BM which will mess your bed up!  But, also, check with your Dr./nurse to make sure it is ok to take this powerful mixture at this stage of your surgery.

Good Luck!

There is a big difference between operating to fix a potential partial bowel obstruction vs operating to lengthen your common channel. If you are agreeable to one but not the other, this is something to discuss ahead of time with your surgeon, and if you really object to having your cc lengthened, put it in writing on your consent form. He can't do procedures without your consent, but if you don't make it clear what you permit and what you don't, he could substitute his opinion for yours.

    Communication is the key.

Why does he want to lengthen your Common Channel?  Just so you know that would mean you would absorb more fat making it easier to gain weight and more likely to be constipated.  Next, bowel obstructions are usually VERY painful.  If you are not in pain, it's not likely you are obstructed.  But it's obvious there's something wrong.  It sounds to me like you and your doc are not communicating.  You need to get all this explained to you until you understand what's going on.  Even if it takes time and effort on the docs part.

What else have you tried?  Just so you know constipation is not a usual post-op experience.  If anything, the opposite is true.  Have you tried going without your supplements for a couple days?  Some types of vites/minerals can be constipating.  Did you suffer from constipation pre-op?  Did they check for motility issues?  Have you gotten a second opinion?  You said it has been going on since July.  What changed in July?  What did you start doing differently?  From 2005 to July 2012 is it correct to assume you were not constipated all that time?

There are some big questions here.  If I was in your shoes, I would need a lot of answers before I let anyone open me up and make my Common Channel longer.  It's not logical to expect that to correct constipation.
