on 1/1/13 2:12 am - Ottawa, Canada
Hi All,
Can you please tell me what stats I should be looking for in a protein drink? I know low carb.. but what kind of numbers am I looking for?
For daily ratios.. what should I be aiming for?? Protein vs Carbs vs Fats.. still trying to learn as much as I can before my appt with my surgeon Jan 15th.
Thanks again!

You are right about low carb. Whey Isolate is correct as well. sometimes some of us develop lactose intolerance so you have to watch out for some powders that have the word concentration in the ingredient list. If you can find one with 25+ grams of protein per scoop and less than 7 grams of carbs for the same scoop than I consider that great. As far as fat, you need fat about 120-150 grams a day as a DSer. We only absorb 20% of the fat we take in. It is the only part of our mal-absorption that has been clinically studied and clinically documented. The average person needs 20-30 grams of fat a day to have healthy skin and hair and to absorb the fat soluable vitamins. With our mal-absorption we need to 120-150 grams to get the needed 20-30 grams for our health. I know what a burden that we must eat high fat. The fat will also keep your BM's softer which can become hard due to all the iron and calcium we have to take.
If you can get 90 to a 100 grams of protein a day by 3 months that is considered success, but it will depend on your sleeve size. You will then adjust that depending on your labs. I adjusted to getting 125 grams after my 3 month labs. Then at 6 months I had to up it to 130-150 and I have to use shakes to get that in. If I get over 150 I feel my best. As far as carbs my doctor is a low baller and said less than 30 a day. My body didn't like that and it is most comfortable losing at 50 grams of carbs a day. If I stick to that level I will still lose 4-5 pounds a week and I am 7.5 months out and have lost 134 of my 183 that I want to lose. I use myfitnesspal to count my carbs, protein and fat. I also post on here in bites, vites and exercites because if I don't have the accountability I won't stick to what my body needs (enough protein and not to many carbs.)
Yanno what - there's all kinds of protein out there, but the absolute most important thing out there is to find something that doesn't suck before you sink a whole lotta money into anything. Don't look for bliss in a beverage, but "doesn't suck" is the best I ever got out of it, myself. Get several single-servings of different brands and flavors and try them as a post op.
