A well meaning friend (diabetic), "recommended" the Russell Stover sugar free line of products. He says they have almost zero carbs. Anyone have any insight into these products? He told me they have candy (not a fav of mine) and some other products which he didn't elaborate. Just wondering what products they make and how are they for DS folk?

I've had some of them before.  They were good.  Their website has a product list.

I can't find ingredients lists on the website, but the last time I had them, they were using sugar alcohols.  I didn't have a problem with it, but I know some people do.

Not everyone can handle sugar free cause all they do is use sugar alcohols instead of sugar.

Even as a diabetic, I'd rather have a GOOD piece of candy over sugar free ones...most sugar alcohols give me the runs and gas (even pre-op).

I don't deny myself a piece of candy but I don't keep it around me.

I am able to tolerate almost any foods with my DS. I just have to be careful not to gain weight and to get all my protein. Russell Stover candies made me soo sick and gassy. The sugar alcohols are poisen for me.

All things in moderation.  The artificial sweeteners can cause gastric distress if you indulge too much.

Prefer the regular full strength candy.  The sugar free stuff is very hard on many because of the sugar alcohols that cause gas and diarrhea.  Some sugar alcohols are sold over the counter as laxatives, so use caution with them.

When I lived in MN there was a Russell Stover's outlet store within driving distance.  I went a couple times a year mostly to buy the SF stuff.  It's really quite good.  But a little goes a long way because of the sugar alcohols.  There's even a warning on the packages that overindulgence can lead to diarrhea.  And it's true.

Sugar alcohols can have some wild side effects.  If you decide to try it, eat it at home till you figure out what you can handle.

I have no sweet tooth, I'm more of a savory fellow so won't be indulging just wondering after my co-worker "recommended" them.
