Seven hours because of extensive adhesions.

Too long!  Virgin DS and an abdomen that had never been opened up before.  8 hours!

But I didn't have a single postop problem.

Sounds like I'm not the only one who had complications! lol

Mine took just over 8 hours due to complications... but all good since the surgery, haven't had a problem!

Thanks, I have never had stomach surgery before just a c-section. I was just trying to figure out if hubby will be able to stay at the hospital but he will probably have to leave before hand to get our daughter from school. Thinking from what everybody else said I will be out of it so it wouldn't really be a major problem if he wasn't able to stay.

MIchele :)

There are many variables. What time is your surgery scheduled? For Don's (TexasRigDiver) we had to be there at 5:30, he was wheeled to surgery by 7:30. We knew surgery would be between 3-5 hours and an hour in recovery. His surgery was 4.5 hours and recovery was 1.5 hours. I wasn't allowed in recovery at all. The doctor came out about 12:15 to tell me all went well.

I had to wait until Don was in his room to see him. I had to leave at 1:30 so had hoped to see him before I left but that didn't happen. I returned at 4:30 and he was in his room.

So, you might want to ask the hospital what the requirements are about the recovery room. That was a stickler for me. I'd never not been able to see him in recovery before but this was his first major surgery. But, he knew I had to leave by 1:30.

Actually, I just asked him if he knew I wasn't there and he said no. He was still so out of it from the anesthesia that he doesn't remember when I got there. I thought they had over medicated him because I could tell he was really out of it but they said it was from the anesthesia. It took several hours for him to become lucid.

The after surgery visit, I feel, is more for the family than the patient. Have your DH tell the nurse or coordinator when he leaves so they know. There were many families not in the waiting room when the doctors came out to talk to them about their loved ones. No one knew where they were.

Sorry so long, thought it might be helpful to hear about this from the support person.

Good luck and congratulations!

Thanks, Diana
