as a fresh post op my tastes changed too.  lots of chemical tastes.  now, 3 years out, most things have settle down with some exceptions.   i no longer love, beets, or asparagus.  beets taste like rusty nails and asparagus taste like slimy vomit. ( sorry).

used to order my steak well done.  now, i like it medium to medium rare.  so yummy.

for me, some stuff was way too sweet for months and it took years to try Diet Coke again.  But don't worry about it, you'll handle it.  :O)

Mine did not change a lot, most things were about the same. Bananas on the other hand were disgusting for months!

I'm nearly 9 years post-op, so I can say that yes, some of my tastes have changed permanently. I now like some things I hated pre-op---mostly cole slaw and deviled eggs. I actually crave them sometimes! I eat a wider range of veggies than I did pre-op, even though as a DSer I eat protein first. I eat a wider range of cheeses, and even meats, than pre-op.

And I have discovered that I don't really like cake.

I had RNY gastric bypass October 30, 2006. After the surgery I found that I could actually smell the food that would give me dumping syndrome. To this day I have it. Although everything smells as it should, if I'm close to anything heavily fried, or for example with butter sauce - the smell will nauseate me. I have put it to the test a few times and it turned out my body developed a heightened sense of smell for foods that would give me dumping syndrome. Boy is it on the money!! Some food will make me sick even if my "nose meter" doesn't warn me but for the most part it will catch 80% of cooked food. Unfortunately it doesn't work for me with cakes or sweets. That is still trial and error to this day. Not that I should have it anyway but occasionally it's a nice treat if I don't start sweating, cramping, etc 5 minutes after I've eaten it.
It's definitely a great tool if it happens to you because it will prevent 3 hour bouts of being sick and torture. I found this site accidentally because I just had some reconstructive surgery done and still 2 weeks post-op everything I eat tastes absolutely repulsive. I can't put anything in my mouth aside from water without getting sick just from the taste. I hope it will end soon! I wish everyone luck in their quest for health!
