does your tastes change after surgery?

I am in the early stages of pre -op. I have gotten the EKG and chest xray blood test, saw shrink, nutrition counseling , and went to a support meeting. During the meeting a man spoke about how his tasted changed after surgery. He had RNY. I was just wondering if this happened for everyone? I have read so much up on the surgery and what to expect afterwards. I know it is a silly question but honestly it is very hard for me to eat stuff that I do not like.

Yes, tastes buds when nuts for a few months post-op. Lots of things tasted like metal or heavy with chemicals to me. Normalcy returned but it took awhile.

Yes, for me as well. Taste buds changed but for the better. Switched to organic produce due to chemical taste of non organic. Ground meats are out now as is most beef. Any foods must be seasoned well too bland food makes me nauseous.

Good point. I've switch to local grass fed beef and free range chicken too. The smell of cooking regular hamburger was enough to make me feel ill.

Yeap, unlike some tho...seasoning did not turn my stomach...lack of seasoning did!

It does "fix" itself for the most part.

I’m 3 and half weeks post op and EVERYTHING changed. I have tried some foods that I loved before surgery and they taste disgusting. I agree with the posts above about the smell of food being a MAJOR factor in the changes. I normally love homemade burritos but I fried the ground beef a few nights ago and about got sick from the smell. Then, when I was done I couldn't even eat it. Everybody else ate them life crazy and I kept asking, “Does this meat smell ruined?” My bf kept telling me it was great that it was all in my head.

Now I crave food with a lot of flavor. The last week I’ve wanted EVERYTHING SPICY or SOUR!

I like your post but I have a couple of questions for you. If you had your DS just 3 weeks ago your already eating solid foods at a level you can have ground beef burritos? I think that's great it's different then my surgeons plan, but then al plans a different. I really like a lot of foods eaten out of tortillas and a day or two ago my wife and I were discussing what we could use to replace flour or corn tortillas. Ow hat are you using as a normal tortilla replacement?

I can't stand "processed" food anymore - I can taste the chemicals. It's weird...and can't do anything sweet either. I consider these both good things.

For a couple months they will be wonky. Had nothing to do with processed or unprocessed food for me. It will return normal, I suggest don't buy food or protein till after post op because you won't know what you can stand.
