Strange food question...

Of course I can barely eat anything at this point, but I have a weird craving for egg rolls. We have a great local Chinese place. I know I can't eat them now, but then I wondered--- can DS'ers ever eat egg rolls? (No rice)  if not, is it because they are fried, or is it due to the wonton wrappers having carbs? Just curious...I am still a bit confused about what is ok to eat by looking at what people post on the daily "bites" post.  Such variety. I assume there is a big difference in your choices the first year and then in maintenance?

And thanks to all of you for your support the other day. I really am feeling better avoiding all dairy and adding the Levesin-- and going in for IV fluids! I also took next week off of work and they have been very supportive.

Fat is a DSers friend, simple carbs are not. This does not mean that you can never eat them again. It means, to me, that you should try not eat simple carbs until you reach your goal weight.  You should concentrate on getting in all your protein in each day for the rest of your life. If you are willing to gamble on getting gas, stomach cramps and gaining weight, then simple carbs are the way to go. If you haven't already, read about our diet on DSFacts.com. I am well over three years out and struggling against weight gain because I got back in the habit of eating carbs. I am getting back on track but old habits do die hard!

I'm so glad you're feeling better!

You've replied to my bites before, so I think I may be part of why you are confused.  I am NOT the poster-child DSer.  I eat my protein first, and then I have a few bites of whatever I want.  There are some DSers that are super-low carb, but I just couldn't do it.  I eat my burger with 1/2 the bun instead of all it because 1. it's too many carbs and 2. it's space I need for the burger.  There are some DSers that would scream at me for eating 1/2 the bun and tell me I should eat it without.  But it gives me ZERO trouble, and I like it.  So that's my choice.

I actually post on the Bites/Vites thread because it holds me more accountable.  It forces me to take a look at my choices and make sure that protein is always #1 in my diet.  But I am not perfect.  And I still don't meet my protein goal of 100g daily(mainly because I haven't found a decent shake yet).  I think for someone like me that struggles with carbs so badly, I need that daily accountability.

The thing that I always keep in mind is to eat my protein first since that's essential to life.  So to answer your question...yep I could eat an eggroll.  I could eat and eggroll dipped in sweet and sour sauce with a side of rice and glass of milk.  I would probably fart once and be on my way.  But I make the choice NOT to eat all that.  Other people would be in the bathroom all day.

But if I was eating chinese, and I ate whatever meat I ordered, I would have a couple bites of eggroll at the end.  But that's just ME.

It really is a lot of YMMV.  I couldn't eat an egg roll without terrible painful and smell to the moon gas.  And as to carbs, please stay low carb until you reach your goal or go a little below.  You will have a bounce back of about 10 lbs from your lowest weight as your body resets.  There will be plenty of time to try out carbs after you are nice and thin.

I eat an egg roll every time I go to the Chinese buffet. And I eat all sorts of fried foods. Why not? Since we only absorb 20% of the fat we eat, eat plenty of it! (*grin*)

I'm only 3 months out and I ate just the inside of the eggroll no probs.

I'm 2 months out and I ate egg rolls at 1 month out. Now, grant it, I can only eat one. I just chewed it good and ate slowly.

Yes, you will eventually be able to eat them again, but give yourself some time. The pre-made ones make me gassy, so I can always tell and appreciate the places that make them fresh.

Sure you CAN!  Lots of us CAN eat anything.  It's what you SHOULD eat and eggrolls aren't it.  Someone else said it and I echo their words, stay low carb till you are under your goal.  After that you will have more latitude on what you eat.  Yes, you will again eat an eggroll!

I agree with what everyone else has said. 7 years out, I eat buffets all the time and if I don't want the fried parts, I just scoop out the inside of the egg roll...or I'll have a spring roll instead since they have a thinner casing to them. Protein first and then complex carbs, then, if there's any room, a tiny amount of simple carbs! I'm battling a slight regain, so I'll be trying to stay away from the simple carbs for awhile, but I've been eating them with few problems...cough...cough...other than the weight regain. It's the same as it was before surgery -- calories in need to be less than calories out in order for you to lose weight. The DS is just our "tool," but we're lucky to have it, so work it!
