You are very fortunate that someone has actually recommended the DS for you (just so you know, and I am not meaning to criticize in any way, there is no space in duodenal, and it's called the DS for short).

You already know the sources of gluten. These are things many DS'ers tend to avoid anyway because they can cause problems with diarrhea for us. So you are already avoiding them, you are ahead of the game. As for protein, they are not good sources of protein anyway. Your protein comes from beef, fish, chicken, turkey, shell fish, cheese, etc - none of which contain gluten. I can't see any advantage with gastric bypass on this issue. If anything, you will have more and better protein options with the DS because of the fat malabsorption we have. You can use any cut of meat, any part of the chicken, cook it with or without added fat. You can't do that with gastric bypass - lean protein only, and cooked without added fat.

"a wide variety of glutten free protein"   That is a weird thing for a doctor to say because almost all protein is gluten free.   The list of the best sources of high quality complete protein foods does not include wheat, rye, barley or oats. Good luck

There are a few of us with the DS that also have Celiac Disease. Mine is the type that the bowel issues went away in my early 20's. I guess I am very lucky in that regard. Anyway, we recently started a gluten free Facebook group if you're interested. Follow the link and ask to join. https://www.facebook.com/groups/DSGlutenFree/ Here are a couple of other links you might be interested in: https://www.facebook.com/groups/174102532625545/ and http://weightlosssurgery.proboards.com/index.cgi?.  Oh, and this one http://www.dsfacts.com/ .

Thanks for posting those links again.  Will check them out, although it is usually a struggle to stay disciplined enough to sign in to this web site every day to report Bites, Vites and Exercites.

Gina:  Only use Facebook to keep up with family so how to join groups is new to me.  Went to https://www.facebook.com/groups/DSGlutenFree/ and clicked on "join". Is that the correct process? Unsure of the protocol but changed Facebook avatar to match ObesityHelp avatar for easier recognition.

The part of the gut that reacts to gluten is largely bypassed in the DS. Perhaps your doctor is concerned about protein shakes. It's completely possible to have a DS and not do protein shakes---I'm nearly 9 years post-op and I've had ONE protein shake. (And it SUCKED!)

I'd love to see what kind of gluten filled protein shakes the doc has in mind....eww!

Meat and cheese is the way to go!

I know for sure Syntrax Nectar and Jay Robb protein shakes are gluten free. You can make good protein coffees and skakes with those too. I think they taste good.
