Help! Newbie and frustrated

Hello:  I just had my three week anniversary for the DS this past Thursday.  I am struggling to get all the protein in, but still trying.  Is it normal to gain weight when you start soft foods?  Since starting soft foods I have only lost three pounds for the week and I actually gained a pound today.  I'm really confused and frustrated.  Any guidance is appreciated.  Michelle

Hang in there!!!!!  Things WILL improve!!!!  Are you using the "protein rule of thumb"?  30 grams by 30 days, 60 grams by 60 days, 90 grams by 90 days.  Your body was just through MAJOR surgery.  PUT THE SCALE AWAY!!!!!

I was not aware of the 30, 60, 90 day rule. I appreciate that. I will try this and see what happens. The dietician just said push to get 90, ugh!

The stall / gain is normal according to what I have seen and experienced.  I am 10 weeks out and "stalled" at 3 weeks as well.  If you go on DSfacts website they explain it very well.  I think it is more related to the fact that it is week 3 than moving to the soft foods.  I was frustrated too and thought I was the one freak of nature for whom the DS would not work but I am now down 55 pounds at 10 1/2 weeks and I have learned that I lose a lot one week then a little bit over the next two, my body takes a break for a couple of days and then another drop...  Take your measurements instead of weighing yourself and try to relax,  drink your fluids, eat the protein you can manage and walk.  Let your body heal and do its thing.

Thanks Renee! You made me smile and I certainly needed that. I will check out that site. I've lost 34 pounds in three weeks so I am very thankful and happy with that but to stay the same for 3days and then gain it was disappointing. I will take my measurements and keep doing the best I can. I appreciate the feedback.

Just think.... when else in your life time were you able to loose 35lbs in as little as 3 weeks???  That's HUGE!  broken heart    Enjoy the ride...

It is perfectly normal in fact I gain more wt then my top pre surgical wt right after but I think that was from all the fluid retention.  20 pound until goal!!!  Hang in there it is a long road and I think it is a work in progress always adjusting.  My initial 6 mths was hard as my stomach was sensitive had a hard time taking my vits and my taste buds kept changing.

You're going to drive yourself absolutely batty if you weight yourself every day.  Weight fluctuations are completely normal from day to day.  To get a good account of your loss, kick the scale underneath the bed for a week, then weigh yourself on the same day at the same time of day each week and resist all other temptation.  It is also completely normal for your loss to slow down or stop completely for a few weeks at a time.  This is giving your body a chance to catch up and redistribute, if you will.  This will happen several times over the next year or so.  I usually discovered that I needed new clothes at this time, so it became a happy period.

The best advice you can get is put the darn scale away!  I didn't for the first month and I was a mess.  I finally put it away and only weighed once a month.  It was amazing and such a reward to finally to get to weigh myself!  Trust me, it will make the DS ride a lot easier if you can stop weighing yourself so often!

So thankful for my DS! 1/20/2012 - SW 290/CW 155 - 1 year to lose, 1.5 years and counting maintaining!
