Vitamin D Too High

I finally got my Doctor to order ALL of the recommended tests from Vitalady.  I don't have all of the results back yet but wanted to get this out so I can prepare what to look for on the results.  My doctor called me at home last night to tell me that my Vitamin D was too high.  The normal range (Canada) is 75-225.  Mine was about 450 - almost to a toxic level.  She said my calcium was not 'too' high but that's all she shared on that phone call.  I will be going to see her when the rest come in.

Backstory:

I am over 2 years post op. My labs were all good on my pre-op and my early post ops although D had dropped a little bit. My one year post op bloodwork got lost between lab and doctor and then I just lost track of time and didn't get back in till now to get it done.

In that time, I as sporadic with my vitamins - didn't stop but wasn't as good with my schedule (example, 7 days of vitamins would last 10-12 days).  I started to feel pain in my legs and joints.  I was certain this was my D dropping. I upped my vitamin D intake to 100k IU and got regular with my vitamins and was for about 3 months prior to this draw.

So now I am worried that they Vitamin D test is wrong OR there is some other serious damage happening inside me.  I did notice a decrease in the leg pain when I upped my D  (I would describe this a what i imagine shin splints feel like because it feels like bone pain in my shins) but the pain is still present. Maybe I am just imaging the decrease.

Anyway, I will get the full results soon I hope but any ideas for what I should look for to help me figure out my calcium/Vit D or what other lab tests will help me figure this out?

I will post my labs when I get them. For now, my Dr. has told me to lay off the Vit D until the rest of the labs come in.

Thanks so much,

Kelly

I wouldn't totally stop my D3 but I'd cut it to 50,000IUs once a week and ask to be retested in 6 weeks. Just a gut feeling no medical in my background to support it.

Thank you Gina.  I agree.

I really think the test had to be done wrong.  Vitamin D toxicity just seems impossible considering my vitamin habits of the past.

Question: did you stop taking the vitamin D for 24 to 48 hours before the blood tests were done?

RNY to DS  210 lbs gone for 5 years.

I did not have a full 24 hours without taking vitamins.  In total, would say there was about 16 hours between taking my vites and the blood draw.

I am torn on this one too... if it impacted the numbers, could it even go as far as to make a deficiency look like toxicity?

Don't know if it could go that far but maybe someone with medical training could respond to that.  Maybe consider asking for a repeat of the test and stop the vitamins two days before you get it done. Shouldn't be a big deal for you since you have skipped days in your vitamin routine before. Comparing the 2 results might answer your questions.

Tell your doctor that you might have messed up the test results by taking your vitamins too close to the lab appointment and ask him to order a repeat NOW, and that you don't want to wait 3 months.

the shin pain could also be:

potassium deficiency  - you check your levels when you get copies from your doc

or not enough Magnesium citrate.  Mag Citrate should be supplemented at half the level of calcium citrate

or insufficient hydration - this is the ne that usually gets me.  When I wake up at night with pain and cramping, I usually recall that I had not drank as much s I should have.  I never get the pains on days when I have consumed large volumes

or, if course, exercising beyond your normal levels
