Why did you choose DS?
Good for you for researching!
The Ds has the best statistics of any wls for percentage excess weight loss, for maintainence of that weight loss, and for resolution of almost all comorbidities. It allows for the most normal pattern of eating, i.e. you are not required to follow a low calorie, low carb, low fat diet (unrealistic for many people) for the rest of your life. There is no dumping, no food getting stuck, no forever forbidden foods. You can drink liquids with your meals. You can safely take NSAIDs (in recommended doses, of course).
For me, the anatomy of gastric bypass, along with the potential nasty side effects like dumping, and not being able to take NSAIDs, were unacceptable. But the real deal breaker was the failure rate. The gastric bypass surgeon who was ready to schedule my surgery quoted a failure rate of 30%. When you keep in mind that in the world of bariatric surgery, "success" is defined as losing just 50% of your excess weight, a 30% failure is very high.
Failure rates and reoperation rates with lap band are the highest of any wls. Longterm results for the sleeve as a stand alone are not yet known, short term looks a lot like gastric bypass. My best guess (I admit I don't know, but then neither does anyone else) is that after a few years, when the restriction wears off, we will be seeing a fair number of sleeve failures, though there will be some successes. We just don't know yet what the breakdown will be.

Honestly, I chose the DS because the RNY scared the crap outta me. The whole pouch/stoma business just gave me the willies. And---I wanted to be able to eat normally.
Nine years later, I'm still tickled pink with my DS. I'm maintaining a lost of 170+ pounds with little or no real effort---I just try to be mindful of my carbs and eat all the protein I can hold.
I had the ds for the same reasons as everyone else here.
Starting weight at surgery was 349 lbs. highest weight was 352.
current weight around 275
had co-morbidities, high cholesterol - gone, borderline diabetic (last test before surgery was very high) - all good now, sleep apnea has gotten better but not gone yet. I couldn't walk without shortness of breath, couldn't stand long enough to do my dishes had to take breaks. Much easier now.
*Starting weight 254lbs BMI of 39.
*DS Aug. 1/12
*Current weight 197lb
*Diabetes resolved (took 4 Metformin a day plus almost 500 units of insulin daily!)
*Stopped taking meds to regulate BP
*Feeling great, full of energy!
1) I chose the DS because:
the RNY lay out if freaking weird and didn't make any sense to me
DS has the best weight loss and maintenance
the 'diet' requirements where more of what i would prefer
no dumping
a normal functioning stomach, just smaller
best cure rate of diabetes (i was pre diabetic before surgery & have diabetes on both sides of my family)
2) starting and highest bmi: 43
3) highest weight was: 259
4) current weight is: 155, 5lbs from 'normal' bmi. (bmi chart is highly overrated)
5) i am not in maintenance yet and i am almost 11 months post op.
What's YOUR starting weight? What's your BMI? Why do you want weight loss surgery? You have to be smart enough to get this surgery. You have to be able to pass a psych test. You have to be committed to a life time of yearly or bi-yearly labs and taking vitamins every day, several times a day. You also have to eat high protein and high fat the rest of your life.
You look very young. How old are you? Gonna have kids? Research more, baby.

I do really appreciate everyone's responses! They are so helpful!
Why did you choose DS?
Tired of being tired of struggling with my weight. I felt if I'm going to do it, do it all the way and be finish. Some people chose the lesser choice, and then regret. You will never go back, better chance of keeping off, and the DS is more forgiving of your bad ways. Its still a working process, but its something I have not regret.
What was your starting BMI?
What was your Starting weight?
292
What is your Current weight?
174 ( I look good and happy)
How is your maintenance (if you've gotten to that point)?
Maintenance is okay,....however, protein helps keep me on track. I love drinking Isopure....it help reduces my appetitete. The key is finding the right protein that works for you.
1 it was the only doable choice, physically due to a nisan wrap, but the idea of never taking naiads is terrible choice, for never being able to treat inflammatory ills such as arthritis or coronary issues again effectively for life. and the effect cure of diabetes, this is the only cure, the other mimic a cure only because the victim isn't consuming carbs. i eat normal and still am cured.
