It appears that Calcium Citrate is causing me some problems. I quit taking it for a few days to see how I would react. I have taken a calcium supplement my whole adult life but it was a mix with magnesium, I just looked it up and it was combined w/part citrate. However, I started taking it again last night. Rather than have the constipation issue, mine is just the opposite plus my stomach is not feeling well and rumbling plus toots. I do realize that I must have this supplement. I'm just trying to figure out what is going on with it. I am allergic to a lot of medications. I have some severe food allergies. I'm beginning to wonder if I have some sort of allergy to it.
I have tried the Calcet, whatever brand the surgeon had, Chewy Bites (my reaction was the worst).
My GF gave me some Upcal to try (haven't tried it yet- will day after tomorrow) as well as Bariatric Advantage chewables.
Has anyone tried the infusions?
My calcium has always been in the High normal range prior to surgery. I will know in the next couple of weeks what it is now being 2.5 mo out.
Thanks!

It could be the mix of magnesiums in the Calcium. Some need that to counteract the constipation that the RNY's encounter, but not as many DSers have this same problem at all. Vitalady's calcium put me into a tailspin, but other brands - no problem. Give the upcal D a try.

I have to take magnesium oxide to balance out the effect of calcium. I've been struggling with the perfect mix for years now.
I'm finally doing a calcium/megnesium mix and taking Bone Booster and all together that helps the most. I sometimes get the toots but am not having the constipation or pain from it.
It takes time.

To my knowledge, and I've done a lot of research on this, because I have problems absorbing calcium, but calcium infusions are for short-lived, emergency type situations only - for example, when one has a severe electrolyte imbalance.

I just finished a 4 week round of multivite, calcium and iron infusions, brought on by my own negligence. Infusions are *not* where you want to go, that's emergency treatment! It's especially worrisome if you have small veins, like I do.
I had horrible labs, and quick action was needed to bring my levels within striking distance of my getting them back up with my home regimen.
I don't get fancy with calcium or vites. I buy Equate (Walmart store brand), and make sure that I cut the caplets to expose the inside, so when I swallow them, the stomach acid has direct contact with the active ingredients, and doesn't have to waste time cutting through the coating. I didn't have any issues until I got sloppy about taking them. My Mom was passing, and I was wound up with so much emotion at that time, I just let myself go.
Simple way to know whether your caplets are coated...if they're brightly colored (pink, yellow, green, blue, etc)or if they are very smooth to the touch and don't feel powdery or if they have a slight sheen, they have a coating.
I just assume everything has a coating, and have at 'em with a pill cutter!

Calcium apatite is meant to be very absorbable. You get that with Vita Cost's Bone Booster Complex or Jarrow Bone Up. I'm getting Bone Booster any day now and will order the other shortly thereafter to compare. Good luck.
