Dr David Kim-Texas
DS on 12/11/12
Has anybody had the DS with Dr Kim? i went to my consulation expecting to get the RNY and he has talked me into the DS. he does seem very knowledgable about the procedure and his reasoning for wanting me to do it sounds right. i was just wondering if anybody else has had this done with him? i haven't met many people who have...
thanks in advance!

He's not on the vetted list of DS surgeons. I'd find out more about him first .. how manu DS surgeries has he performed? Some Drs will say they do the DS but don't.
Why did he say he wanted you to have the DS?

EDIT: He doesn't even list the DS on his profile page here ... fishy!!

It does on his actual web page...but I don't think he has been performing it for too long. Long story short...I had the band in 2008...removed due to infection in 2010....and he says with all the scare tissue it will be very difficult to do the pouch for the RNY and all the stapling for the connections up there with all the scar tissue from my previous 2 surgeries... which does make sense. He also said with having a higher BMI of 55...the DS has proven for better long term success and he feels it will be a better fit for me and my stomach considering everything else I have been through.
Thanks for ur suggestions..im gonna keep looking more into it.
I am intrested to see if anybody else has any experience....

Perhaps this is something new he's been learning about? If so, I say BRAVO, for we could definitely use more DS surgeons. If he's new to the procedure, ask who he learned it from (they usually do a small apprenticeship of sorts, operating alongside an experienced surgeon) and how many he's done. It's refreshing to find a surgeon willing to take the time to learn more.

I think Dr. Kim has given you excellent reasons for the DS rather than RNY. Actually, I'm impressed that you went to him for RNY and he recommended DS. So often, we hear about people wanted the DS and docs (or their staff) trying hard to talk them out of it, and often not for good reasons, but just because the doc doesn't do the DS and they don't want to lose a paying customer - oh sorry, I meant patient.
My only concern here is with the extent of Dr. Kim's experience with the DS, which is unknown to me, esp with you being a revision patient. There is no reason you can't ask him how many DS's he's done, has he done people with prior lap band before, etc. And if you're not happy with the answers, arrange a consultation with Dr. Stewart in Denton, who definitely has the level of experience you need.

I don't know of anyone on this board or FB that has had the DS with Dr. Kim. He is new at doing the DS & I believed he trained under Dr. Stewart....But, since you have had the LapBand I would go with Dr. Stewart. At least talk with Dr. Stewart first. He is a much, much more experinced DR! Just saying...
