can a non meat eater get a DS

I should clarify for anyone else reading this thread, that i do get my protien in but I have so much trouble getting it from food that at 4 years out from RNY I still have to do the protien shakes when I should be getting it from foods. I am not considered non compliant with my intake levels as I do the supplements and protien shakes. Where I am non compliant is the weight gain from allowing carbs back in and lack of serious excerize (which I have now begun the change back) But I do hear what you are saying it is appearing as though I may need to sit down with a doctor and discuss in depth my eating preferences before thinking about a DS. Whether he thinks the protien shakes would be okay with a DS or not. I was looking at the Ds because my pouch is still small yet I have managed to gain back so much weight.

Another thing to consider is if you're not enjoying meats, then what are you eating for substance to fill your pouch.  You already know that the protein drinks come and go quickly, rendering you hungry.  As a semi-vegetarian, that leaves veggies, rice, pasta, grains, all carbs (some complex, but still).  This can be a serious downfall.  A DS stomach does allow for a small-but-normal size meal as time goes by.  I eat my protein first, followed by a little veggies and then starch (or dessert).  What would you fill your stomach with?  It can probably be done, but not pretty IMO.  It's good that you're thinking of this now, though, so you can make a plan or choose another direction,.

You'd have to eat a lot of nasty processed foods to keep your protein levels up.  It will take a lot of seeds and fish to make up what I get a good variety of all the things you don't like.  It would be a very limited diet, and nothing I personally would want to endure.

Whoa Nelly on the not getting the protein from shakes.  I get the lion's share of my daily protein from my morning and before-bedtime coffees.  Without those, my tiny, tight little sleeve would never allow me to eat 120 grams of protein in a day.  I realize that's different for RNY people.  But it's an important distinction I had to make.

And I would not call you noncompliant.  I'd say the RNY has failed YOU, dear.

Research twice, cut once.

I.  am.  not.  a.  doctor.

Thank you, my doctor is ok with the shakes too, I mostly wondered about the DS and not getting in the fat from the meat products.

Most DSers eat a high-fat diet, but we're not necessarily required to---we just enjoy it. (*grin*)

Seriously, if you'll be careful to get in enough of the essential fatty acids, you don't have to have animal fat. You *may* become constipated without it, howevr.

Our basic diet is high fat, high protein, and low carb.  Most think of fat as a free food and try for around 100gr of protein per day.  That's the diet so try it on for a couple weeks and see if you can do it.

I believe this would be very difficult to to on a long term basis without meat.  I hope you really LIKE those protein shakes!

Then there are those like me that have to get 130-150 grams of protein a day to keep my levels where they need to be. If you turn out to be one of those who needs the even higher number of protein then I would be worried. Protein deficiency is nothing you want to mess with.

I am not a meat eater.  Although I am a newbie (surgery on Aug 1, 2012), it's been rough. I am a fish person but cannot tolerate a lot of what I ate before.  The Dr just gave me CREON today.   In hopes, that I can process what I'm not processing. The Dr doesn't even think my protein shake is being processed.

I think a lot of it has to do with how badly you want it and no doctor can tell you that.  My diet is very limited ( I have a lot of food allergies, etc.) but I would not go back to my life before the DS.  Being a "normal" weight has just improved my health sooo much.

My first year I ate almost all fish.  Second year I added chicken.  I had figured this was a step I might take when I was planning for my DS.  And I surprised my self this year and added some pork. I really crave protein in a way that I couldn't have understood before my DS. I still don't eat beef.

I never told my surgeon I was a semi-vegetarian because I didn't want it to be a factor.  I knew I would make it work.

So I guess I'm trying to tell you that your tastes may change.  A lot.  The way I eat now is entirely different from the way I ate before my DS.  It just takes a while to wrap your mind around it.  As far as the fats thing, if you don't like the taste of butter you can cook your foods in oil.
