Low-Fat diet required for DS?
Hello! I'm new to this forum. Started my 3-month WL for insurance yesterday. YAY!!!!!
I am still trying to decide which procedure to have (DS/RNY/Sleeve). I met with the dietician yesterday and he said with DS I would always need to eat low fat foods.
I'd love to hear from those who are a bit into their journey on what experiences you've had? Good/Bad/Ugly :) I want to know what I'm getting into.
Thanks!

That is completely false. The beauty of the DS is that you can and should eat high fat foods like full fat cheeses, whole milk, half and half, heavy cream, sour cream, and butter. You also can and should eat higher fat meats like bacon. With the DS you need to limit carbs (most stay under 50-75 per day). A lot of people go gluten free because white flour can cause bloating and gas. Check out dsfacts.com, it's a great site with tons of info.

The low fat things is for people with the gastric bypass or sleeve. We dsers only absorb 20% of the fat we take in. Therefore if we take in 100 grams of fat a day we only absorb 20 of those. Our bodies need 15-20 grams a day for healthy skin and hair. A dser needs that 100 grams of fat to keep us regular in the bottom end. The ds was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I am 20 weeks post-op and have lost 98 pounds. I eat bacon at least 4 times a week. I slather butter on things. I eat full fat mayo, sour cream, salad dressings, & cheeses. If I were eating low fat foods I would be constipated beyond belief.
Good luck on your journey. If you haven't checked out www.dsfacts.com do so. It has tons of information.

No, no, no.
We see this all the time. Dieticians and nutritionists are unable to grasp the realities of the DS, that being, that you only absorb 20% of the fat you consume. This means that eating foods high in fat will not interfere with weight loss or cause weight regain, will not cause high cholesterol because you aren't absorbing it, and will not cause hardening of the arteries because the fat never gets to the arteries when it isn't absorbed.
Some people find they actually need to INCREASE the amount of fat they eat to prevent constipation. Not everyone. But the important point is that the info you are being given is wrong.

Please take a look at www.dsfacts.com and check out the good DS surgeons there. We've heard some pretty bad poop over the years about Spiegel.

Good grief... Your NUT is, well, a nut. And what he knows about the DS IS just about the size of a peanut.
Supplements. Anyone who has the DS is going to have to take a small handful of pills at least twice a day. PERIOD. This is mandatory. It is a condition of being able to live with this surgery. If you can't/won't take your pills, the DS is not for you.
We don't absorb most of the fat we eat. Fat is pretty much a free food for us. We use real butter, cream, bacon, salad dressings, mayo, sour cream, etc. Fat is your friend. What's a pretty perfect DS meal? A pound of bacon.
What you don't want to eat is carbs. Bread, flour, 'white' foods. Anything with starches and grains. Carbs will inhibit your weightloss and maybe even make you gain weight. Sugar is the devil to the DS. If you HAVE to eat a potato(starch), make sure it's loaded up with butter, sour cream, cheese, and bacon.
Protein is another freee food and you need a lot of it because of your malabsorbtion. Meat, cheese, eggs...eat all you want. And if you fry an egg, fry it in butter.
There's stages to all this. Immediately postop, your job is to heal and stay hydrated. Eat whatever you can tolerate. Don't worry about what you are eating, just eat. Once you get to the point where you know you are hydrated and more or less OK, it's time to cut the carbs, up the protein and lose weight. The best thing you can do is forget about carbs till you reach your goal. After you reach goal, experiment and see what you can tolerate without gaining.
Quite a few people find they can pretty much eat as they please. Others will have to be very carb conscious for the rest of their lives or they will gain. I've also seen quite a few of the folks who got the free ride easy weightloss have to change and start really watching carbs around the 4 or 5 year mark.
So now you are worried about your cholesterol. Forget that. You don't absorb the fat. It never reaches your liver. You will most likely have the cholesterol of a 10 yo postop.

The good thing about the 3-month insurance hoop is that you have time to find a better surgical practice. I would especially AVOID Speigel and Barker. The main one in your state with a good reputation in the DS community is Dr. Stwart in Denton. Dr. Wilson in Houston is listed on dsfacts.com, but in my opinion has only a so-so or blah reputation.
