Revision approved: Fear sets in
You've made a great decision to revise to the DS, the operation you should have had to begin wtih. Lap band results in general are not great even with lighter people, and virtually destined to failure for someone who started where you did.
You made a not so great decision to discuss this with your family. OK, I know that each family has its own dynamics, but this so often goes badly. Family is usually clueless about what life is like for a SMO person, what the real potential risks/benefits of bariatric surgery are, and of just how painful your life (and death) will be without wls. You have worked your hardest and tried your best with diet and exercise. There is nothing more you can do without medical treatment, and that's what the DS is - a medical treatment for the serious disease of morbid obesity.
No one can tell you that you won't have complications with your DS. That just isn't reality. People seem to think no one has complications with the lap band, but you did. You have a good surgeon and I am hopeful that you will have a better surgical experience this time. I know, for sure, that you will do better with your weight loss with the DS that with the useless piece of silicon that you have now.

Hi,
Just wanted to say I had a revision done from RNY to DS in March 2012. It was a bumpy road but I doing well now. Like you said it is a tool in the weight loss process. There is still lots of hard work. I sit here saying that as I wait for my trainer. I don't want the trainer but know I need the trainer to get my walking in.
So glad you have a good surgeon. That makes all the difference. You will be fine. Don't worry too much about the negative comments. They are coming from their own fears.
Best of luck, Terri

I am sorry to hear your family didn't react well to your news. My family had the same reaction at first and it took me a little while to realise that it wasn't because they weren't being supportive. They were just really scared of a surgery they didn't know anything about.
It took me a few days to make them understand that at 345 pounds I was dying a slow painful death every day and I did not want to spend the rest of my life doing less and less as it took more and more effort to just move around doing everyday things.
I had done my research into the procedure and my surgeon and knew that this was the right decision for me. I explained the procedure to them several times in as plain a maner as I could and often asked different members of my family if they had any questions I could try to answer for them. It went a long way towards alleviating their fears.
Give them some time to adjust and in the meantime, make peace with your decision and look forward to the journey. It is very exciting.

One more thing - the only pain I had was from the gas they pump into your body so they have room to do the laparoscopic procedure - It lasted two days but they gave me good pain meds so it wasn't bad at all. Other than that, I can only say I have had a bit of discomfort when I ate or drank for the first little while but not actual pain.
