Hello everyone so I was all set on getting the Bypass in Mexico and Dr. Castaneda Just worte me and says he thinks that I should get the BPD-DS surgery done instead of the bypass....What are your thoughts?  Has anyone had this procedure done?   Are you happy with the results?   How was the recovery?   Thank you all for your time and help     Take care and look forward to hearing from you all..

You will want to read and research before jumping into having the DS and thoroughly check out that surgeon. There are some less than reputable ones there trying to sell the DS. Please check out www.DSFacts.com. There's a list of vetted DS surgeons there. Dr Ungson is one of 2 in Mex I would trust. The other one is still learning with Dr U by his side.

I've had an easy journey. I take Vitalady's vitamin regimen and drink protein shakes to augment my diet; I have awesome labs. I also have blood work done every 6 months and follow up with my dietitian and surgeon every 6 months.  Anyway, everyone has a little different approach and journey please read everything on DSFacts. :)

Right advice, wrong surgeon!

The DS provides the highest percentage excess weight loss, best maintainence of that weight loss, and highest rate of resolution of almost all comorbidities of any wls. It is esp useful for people with high bmi's such as yourself (not criticizing, just a reality). It also has a much more normal way of eating than gastric bypass - no dumping (which is a nasty side effect, NOT a weight loss tool), no food getting stuck, you can drink liquids with meals, you can take NSAIDs, safely.

However, this surgeon is NOT known as an experienced DS surgeon. If you are going to Mexico for the DS, the only ones to consider are Dr Ungson and Dr. Aceves. We have seen some terrible experiences with others. It is up to you to be careful about picking an experienced DS surgeon.

Also, it is imperative that anyone considering the DS learn all about it. You need to understand the protein, vitamin and mineral needs you will have for the rest of your life. These are issues with gastric bypass as well, but with some differences, so take this opportunity to educate yourself before making this big decision. You can get a lot of great information at dsfacts.com

BPD-DS is the same as DS, so no worries.
My only concern is that I've not heard of this surgeon at all, let alone as one that does the DS.

Beware - there are some real butchers out there.  I highly recommend that you seek out some real-life US references on this guy.  You're probably going to MX because you you can't afford it otherwise.  Consider if you can afford the complications of a hack as well.  Dr. Ungson is very well respected around the world, please look at him.

I looked him up and found him on the medical turism website and it was between him and dr. Joya who is also there.   I did find his name listed here on this website when I was looking and I found alot of great comments about him I have yet to find anything negative ( besides people commenting on the language barrier which will not be a problem for me)   I keep googling his name and looking for anything on him from other websites and havent found anything bad.  there were some reviews on here also for him.    Is there somewhere else I can check him out?    I know I asked them to send me all the information on him and they sent his website and his video and a copy of his resume and certificates.  he works in Juarez and in Puerto Valarta.   Any help you all could give me to help me reasearch him more would be great!   Thanks :)

If you haven't found anything bad...however not a whole lot of good, then I would move on. Seriously, he may be brand new or you may wind up with some hybrid that nobody wants to touch when you come home with problems. For those patients of his you've found, did they get the DS from him or another procedure? You want to take all of these into account. For all you know, he may have looked up a diagram, practiced on a person or two and said "yep, I can do DS". It's way too complicated to learn on the fly, which is why it's not so widespread as other procedures. Ask who he learned how to do it from. It will be likely if he actually took the time to train properly, that he learned from Dr Marchenesi or Ungson, who is where I'm trying to steer you to. Yes, I'm trying to scare you, because I've seen some bargain shoppers wind up a hot mess when they got home, and couldn't find a surgeon to fix what was done to them. Look to DSFacts.com to find a surgeon who is well known for being good at what they do DS-wise. On this site, they'll pay to say whatever they want to say. Many say they do the DS just to get you through the door to talk you into a RNY. DSFacts is put together by DSers, for DSers, without advertisers.

Another thing, these medical tourism places charge a premium to coordinate everythng. Many of the docs have their own coordinators that do it all for nothing for you. You're likely paying an extra $2-3K just for them to be your travel agent.

It's still called that by some people as a way of paying hommage to the original BPD, also called the Scopinaro procedure. The BPD was essentially a large-pouch RNY. It was very efffective as far as weight-loss goes, but it had some unpleasant side effects. When Dr. Hess combined the duodenal switch with a sleeve gastrectomy, he called it the BPD-DS to honor Scopinaro.

It's far more correct to call it the VSG with DS. Technically, the "duodenal switch" just refers to the intestinal portion.

BPD-DS is the old (long) name for the DS (duodenal switch).

There are many on this board who had surgeries done in Mexico, and there are some OH vetted surgerons listed on www.dsfacts.com .

Seek out the members who had surgeries in Mexico, and look into the ones listed on the DS site I mentioned.

Good luck to you!
