I have upped my iron significantly. I am taking 5 of the Vitalady's tender iron. My poop has turned a dark bluish black. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

Iron tends to turn poop a green colour... black I would be a bit concerned about as it can be blood.
I had OHIP approved Duodenal Switch surgery with Dr. Dennis Hong at St. Joseph's Hamilton on March 7th, 2012. Want more information on the DS in Ontario? Send me a private message!

Yes, iron can turn your poop black.  It's a good sign that the iron is being absorbed.  If you want to test that it is the color and not a bleeding problem, stop the iron for a few days and see if the color changes back.

Yes when I take theVitalady tender iron, my stuff is black. If you stop taking it, it goes back to the norm...its just  the being absort.

FYI- I am no doctor but this is years of observation.

Yes, it is the iron. What I don't see is why people say that the color is a good sign that it is being absorbed. Seems to me if it comes out in your stool it isn't being absorbed... That's why we have to take so much.

Exactly what I was thinking Gail, but it has changed back. I only had two or three days of the blackish blue. It is quite interesting I never know what color its going to be. Never thought I'd talk this much about poop, more than when my kids were in diapers and potty training.LOL But I love my DS. I'm down 87 pounds in 3 months and 3 weeks.
