Scheduled for DS on 11/6/2012 -need the good the bad and the ugly post op
Had VSG on 11/2/10 lost 105 lbs and now gaining some back and not having resoultion of my co morbidites. I hear about the GReat weight loss etc... but I am very concerned with the extreme gas and BM'S post op. I have to work and have people around me. I cannot have the wall paper burning gas and BM accidents at work. Did any one end up wearing depends? When I first talked to my bariatric surgeon about this revision allhe sad was I would not eat simple carbs more than once, I WOULD NEVER DO THAT AGAIN! and he smirked. I have another appt to further discuss my concerns. I am self pay and $23K is lots and lots and losts of money anyway you look at it. I am very fearful of Mexico for this complicated surgery. So that is not a choice. That said I had NO problems with VSG and recvoery. some loose BM's at first but liquid in liquid out was my mantra. Any discussion would be GREAT! thank you all. I'm a month out fom my DS and doing OK so far. i don't have much gas and it isn't stinky if I do have gas. I have BMs in the AM. i've not had any accidents and am doing pretty well so far.

I am three months out. I only have really stinky gas when I eat simple carbs. I had sticky rice this weekend and it was horrific. If I eat correctly, I have gas at night and it is not much worse than pre-op. My bowels move in the morning. You may have to get up earlier to give your bowles time to work before going to work. Good luck.
Well, of course your surgeon said that. He doesn't do the DS. If you choose the DS, he loses a paying customer. Or, if you prefer to be a bit less cynical, he may be confused between the old BPD and the modern BPD/DS. See my answer on your other thread about that.
You can control gas/diarrhea with watching your diet. Carbs will cause problems for you. Fat won't interfere with weight loss because we absorb so little of it, but if you consume too much, it can also cause diarrhea. So when you know you will be around people, eat smart ahead of time, meaning no junk after dinner and a healthy, protein breakfast, and you should be ok.
And you don't need to go to Mexico. There are self-pay options right here in the USA. You can find the best list of vetted DS surgeons at dsfacts.com, then make some phone calls or send emails to find out who would do your revision and how much it would cost. Some have self-pay packages. There is also a lot of great info about the DS on that website.

DS on 08/11/12
At two weeks post-op lactose is not my friend. Other than that normal BMs and no excess gas.
I wouldn't be so hasty in overlooking Mexico as an option. Drs. Aceves and Ungson did my surgery and it was the best experience I have ever had in a hospital. The care was amazing and my recovery has been great. I was up and about the same day, my pain was never worse than a 3 out of 10, and I was totally off pain meds by day 6. My incisions are healing really well and other than some fatigue you'd never guess a had surgery 16 days ago. I guess for me who does your surgery is more important than where it is done.
Whatever you decide good luck!

I'm not a surgeon, but from the DSers I know who eat simple carbs/simple sugars, it seems that the shorter your common channel, the worse the gas/BM problems are. My cc is 75 cm, and even complex carbs give me gas! I used lactose free milk in the beginning, and used whey protein isolate for my shakes. If I have a hankering for ice cream, I make sure I eat it at home (single , no kids or pets!)
DS gas (farts) could be marketed to the Defense Department! I always carry one of those purse size body sprays (97 cents at Wally World), just in case I get hold of some "hidden simples", and one "slips".
The bloating and resulting gas pains can make you want to just lie down and roll to try to get it to move! (make sure you are alone when it does! The "hang time", even outdoors, is unbelievable!)
You are relatively safe with 100% whole wheat, and whole grains like oatmeal, Bob's Red Mill has a 5 grain hot cereal that sits well with me, as does Kashi Go Lean (Red Box), which also has 13g of protein per serving. It's also a great snack food. The fiber will also solidify things a bit.
I wore Depends early out, just in case.
