I am looking for a doctor who accept out of state medicaid. I have Alabama medicaid and the doctors who did do the duodenal switch no longer do it. I Right now I am on SSI I way a few pounds shy of 500 pounds. I dont care if I have to go out of town for a procedure to be done. I have tried alabama, iowa, nebraska, florida, and texas. We do have bariatric surgeons in Alabama but they only do lap band, realize band, and gastric bypass. But based on my researd The duodenal switch is the surgery best fit for me. So basically I am looking for a doctor who accept out of state medicaid and will do the duodenal switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here is a link for DSFacts.com & the link will take you to the surgeon's page. You will need to call their offices, and speak with the insurance people to get your question answered.

I don't mean to be a downer. But are you sure your health benefits work out of state? I have California's version of medicaid and am told I can only see dr's in-state unless it is an emergency.

I was told two different things. One thing I heard was that i can only use it in alabama. The other thing i heard was that I can file a medical request. So I honestly dont know. I called medicaid and the only thing they said was is that its up to the doctor.

Does your medicaid come with a secondary insurance or do you have strictly medicaid?
I am having a hell of a time just trying to get a consultation with a DS surgeon here in California where there are actually surgeons. I have a secondary insurance but they won't let me see anyone unless they are located in the town I live in. And guess what, no DS surgeon's in my city. So, I am currently appealing with an external appeal, the DMHC. Not sure if Alabama has anything like that.
If you can get a PCP to say you need the DS over the others, maybe try there, not sure but maybe he/she can try to refer you to one specifically. Like write 'duodenal switch surgery'' on the referral request specifically.

i think medicaid is primary for me because on the paper I received it said it was full. My doctor keeps talking about gastric bypass and has Never heard of the duodenal switch. I guess I am in a pickle :/

What about supplying your PCP with info on the DS? Like bring print outs and such?
I have only had one doctor that knew what the DS was and that was my endocrinologist. My jaw dropped when she said she was familiar with it.
