Amanda,
1) Do NOT do anything til you have the EOB's in hand. That is your starting point.
2) IF (and I mean IF) you do actually owe all that, go to the billing office with a detailed list of what your monthly bills are...sometimes, esp in the hospital's case, you can get other help.
3) And do this last...once it is decided, make monthly payments...tailored to YOUR ability to pay. As long as you make a monthly payment to them in a timely manner, they can not report you to the credit bureau. But you and they have to agree to the payment.
They would rather get a small monthly payment than NONE at all...you may be paying this the rest of your life but it will keep them from reporting you.
I was billed one time by a hospital (this was back in 1999) and dug out ALL the EOB's from all the charges they had listed. I found all but one and that one was less than $10. As we then lived almost 3 states away when they billed me, I had to do this all by fax, mail, and phone. I ended up talking to the CFO to get someone in finance to talk to me (boy was he pissed that I called him about a member of his staff), BUT I got things all sorted. Of the almost $1000 they said I owed, I ended up owing all of less than $10.00 (the EOB I could not find)
The rest of the EOB's I found all stated I owed nothing on MY part. That is why it's the place you start.

First off im going to send a letter to my insurance company
trying to get them to pay more on the surgery, i know the hospital is not a prefered provider
of the insurance company but they dont have a prefered provider that actually performs the
DS so i didnt have a choice about it.
That was a suggestion of one of their customer service reps.
Hope it helps. I will let you know if this works at all.
Thanks for all the help.
