Flagyl, a few questions...

I see on the boards there are a lot of DSers who use Flagly as weekly or monthly maintenance to control their "issues."

I have read multiple places that since Flagyl its an antibiotoic if you over use it you can become resistant so you should only use it under close supervision. You should use it for the entire 10 days to be sure any bacteria it gone and doesn't come back and you need another round.

Having said that I have used Flagly and (and except for the no drinking thing) I could stay on it forever!

Now my questions... Have you had any problems? Does you Dr. prescribe it or did you buy it off the Internet? How long have you been taking it? What is your schedule?

I told my surgeon I was taking it and he said ok and wrote in in my file. He didn't have a problem with it and has prescribed it for other patients I know. I order mine as FishZole from vet or pet supply online stores. I have mixed it up a bit for the past 4 1/2 years. I start with a 10 day course or 250mg 3 times a day. For maintenance I either go with 250mg Mon, Wed and Fri or 500mg Mon and Tues. I've tried probiotics, no probiotics, both fish zole and probiotics, only fish zole, and it goes on and on. Tweaking and seeing how I do.

My surgeon wouldn't prescribe it for me, so I bought fish zole and used it for a few months. I didn't like the idea of becoming resistant, so I stopped and payed more attention to what I eat. I do best when I eat yogurt daily. The probiotics do me good without adding more pills to take.

My PCP ordered my first two rounds of Flagyl back in Aug '08. 20 pills $20 or so... Now, I get Fish Zole - $14 for 100 of the 250mg. I haven't had any problems with it. I generally wait until the smell builds up, and take 1. If I'm going somewhere and staying with other people, I'll take it 3-4 days before I go, then take it with me. I've found that I can't take 3 pills a day anymore, loosens up my stools way too much. It's bad enough for the 24 hrs after I take it. I've decided that I'll do Chia seeds morning and night, then take Flagyl before bed.

You don't want to take your Probiotics with the Flagyl. Flagyl kiss all the bacteria in your guts - good and bad. After you're done with the Flagyl, and if you can do probiotics, start them 24 hours after.

You will know when the bad bacteria has built up... if you eat only protein and you still have quite a bit of gas and you need a gas mask for the bathroom.

Hi Gina,
I think my last buy was Amazon, but it's gone up. I bought like 3-4 bottles. 1 of the 500 and the rest were the 250. I used to get it from Lambert Vet Supply for like $12. Maybe the last group was $18 and $32 for the 500mg.

I am going to try Fish Zole for the first time to help with what I think must be a bacterial overgrowth from being out of control with sweets for a few months as I am always bloated with a protruding upper stomach like I am PG. I just hate it. I am going to try that and then Probiotics I got from Mercola and then try try try to behave after that!

Does anyone have any other suggestions for the problem???

Flagyl kills all the bacteria in both limbs... good and bad. Hold off on the yogurt while you are taking the Flagyl. PCPs will generally order Flagyl for you for a round, but will want you to do stool samples to make sure you don't have any other bugs. You may have more bathroom runs while you are taking Flagyl. AVOID alcohol, until you have completed your 7 or 10 day cycle.
