Hi everyone.  Just had the first of my supervised 6 month diet and the PA instead of focusing on me loosing weight during the visits is focusing on teaching me what I will be eating after I have the DS surgery.  I'm confused by what she is telling me.  She says that I only will need 60-80 grams of protein and that my diet will almost be like the south beach diet (low carb/low fat) and that I will need minimal supplements.  I know that my diet will be low carb but from what I have seen posted from veterans is higher protein, higher fat and quite a few supplements, and of course plenty of exercise.  Can any of you suggest what a normal diet is during the loosing phase?  Any help is appreciated. I know I have a few months to go but want to start to mentally getting prepared for what my new life will be like. Thanks.

What I found was that my diet was more like Atkins with LOTS of supplements and protein shakes. Now in maintenance, it's more like South Beach but has never been "low fat" and always more like 120+ grams of protein....still LOTS of supplements and monitoring labs every 6 months. Your program sounds more like RNY or sleeve advice, not DS. Happens a lot, that's what they train dietitians to preach even if it's not true.

Here are some links that might help, or at least give you something to read while you're waiting. The pre-op ideas is a good thing to read and these links also include all Vitalady's plans for the various surgery types. Oh, and one that's a generic chewable plan for folks that have a lot of trouble with pills and capsules. :)

I follow her DRNY_ERNY_DS plan, with tweaks for my specific issues, and my labs are awesome at almost 5 years post-op.

Wow, I had no idea there were that many supplements involved.  I feel very naive.  Do you ever get used to taking that many and/or do you ever stop needing all of them?

I'm not trying to hijack this, I was just curious.  I have been seriously considering the DS also, and knew supplements were invlolved, just not to that extent. :/

Some folks find they can adjust down by watching their labs and tweaking supplements when needed. These are mostly individual supplements that you can work with as you get labs back. Some folks go with programs like Vita4Life that are all-in-one capsules--DSrs take 12 of those a day and may need to add things like calcium or iron separately.
I've gotten my iron markers up and have been able to cut back. My vitamin A, which was a struggle at first, came up and I've been able to cut back to 1 capsule a week. I also only take 1 capsule of B-complex a week. Other things are a little higher than the basic plan or added to it; vitamin K2, calcium, boron, mag citrate. You get in a routine but it's a pain--a trade off for good health. :)
