Hi all.  I will be 2 weeks weeks out tomorrow.  What are some things you all were eating?

Let's see if I remember: thinned out oatmeal, mashed potatoes, tomato soup with cheese melted in, poached egg, Greek yogurt......just a few bites of anything. I tried the retried beans and didn't like it. I was mainly concentrating on fluids.

Lots of people ask what to eat after surgery, so she kept a record of the foods that she ate for the first two months after her DS so that others could get ideas for themselves.


Here's what she was eating at two weeks out....


• Cottage Cheese

 

• Activia Yogurt

• Kraft Cheese Snackables (Each piece is 6 grams of protein and is only one ounce. Colby, jack or cheddar.)

• Egg Salad (I chop the egg small and add full fat mayo.)

• KFC Chicken Leg (I eat very little of the breading, but it does add some flavor.)

• Rotisserie Chicken from Costco

• Turkey Breast

• Roast Beef Rolls (Deli roast beef with Philly cream cheese inside)

• Hormel Beef Roast Au Jus (Pre-cooked in the meat section at the grocery.)

• Cheesecake Factory Buffalo Chicken Wings w/ blue cheese

• Champion Pure Whey Stack Banana Scream (1.5 scoop=34.5g protein)

• 42g New Whey Protein vials (Only when I have to, they are yucky.)

• Revival Soy Protein Chips



Things she added in at 3 weeks out...

• Genisoy Protein Chips (At Kroger in the health food section.)


• Crab Legs (So moist and I drown them in butter.)


• Special K20 Protein Water (Gotta be strawberry kiwi.)

• Very moist, cooked no more than medium rib eye steak

• Small amount of popcorn

• Dry Roasted Peanuts



Things she added in at 1 month out...

• Chicken Salad

• Insides of tacos and meximelts at Taco Bell

• Hillshire Farm Lil' Smokies with a little bbq sauce

• Homegrown Tomatoes

• Pork ribs with bbq sauce

• Corn on the cob with butter

• Mashed Potatoes


Things she added in at 8 weeks out...

• Wendy's Chili with cheese, onions and sour cream

• Country Style Pork ribs with bbq sauce

• Spare ribs with bbq

 

• Baby back ribs with bbq

• Pulled pork

• Jimmie Dean Breakfast Bowls

• Val's Ricotta Fluff Stuff

• Egg Omelets with cheese and ham, green peppers and onions

• Shrimp ****tail

• Starting to eat salads in small amounts

• Bacon

• Sausage

• Very tender pork of just about any kind

• Fazoli's Submarine Sandwiches, inside only. (The roast beef is really good.)

• Very moist, cooked no more than medium rib-eye steak

• Bob Evans Farmers Market Omelet

• Eatsmart Soy Crisps, Tomato, Romano, and olive oil flavor

• Homemade chili, no beans (Lowers the carb count WAY down.)

• Cheesecake Factory Firecracker salmon rolls

• Salads made with ham, egg, onion, gr. pepper, tomato, bacon bits, and cheese with real ranch dressing

Thanks for the ideas everyone.   I just had tomato soup with melted cheese.  I dont think it is sitting to well right now.

 Hi Gina,

The first few weeks are really rough.  It might just be trial and error to see what your new stomach is going to like, for now.  It will get better.  If the tomato soup isnt sitting well today, try it again in a few days if you want.  It can really change that quickly.

Try soft, mushy things that seem appealing to you, and dont pu**** too hard.  Hydration is the most important thing at this point.

Hope you're doing ok and continue to heal well.

Ok, I am almost two weeks out and a lot of that stuff seems like it would be too hard texture wise. For my hospital we are still in the pureed stage until week 5. So alot of that stuff seems like a really bad idea at two weeks out. I mean the stuff on that blogger's list. With that being said...I am only two weeks out and may still be stuck in the idea that my Dietician and NP know everything.

 For the first month, i was so afraid to eat anything that wasn't really creamy or liquid.  Also, what agreed with me one day, another day it may not have sat well, so it was trial and error.  I would have very small bites or spoons, often through out the day.  I could not have a lot of anything three times a day.  It was more like a spoon or two, 20 times a day.  Same thing went for the fluids.  I sipped all day long.  Sometimes I would measure my liquids in shot glasses that were lined up with 8 shot glasses.  Each one was an ounce, so when I was done with the 8 I knew I had 8 ounces in.

Here are some items I was eating for the first month or so.

Chicken or beef broth
Chicken egg drop soup
Pureed chick peas
egg salad really creamy
chicken salad, also really creamy
Creamy peanut butter
Isopure Protein drinks
Whipped cottage cheese
Sugar free pudding
Sugar free jello
sugar free ice pops
Greek Yogurt plain with sugar free smuckers jam
Protein shakes vanilla or chocolate
creamy tunafish (the creamier, the better)
mashed whipped potatoes
brewed fresh ginger tea (this helped calm my stomach)
decaf green tea (either cold, hot or room temp)
decaf iced coffee w/splenda
watered down diet cranberry juice ****tail
finely chopped/creamed crab salad
smashed /creamed bananas in greek plain yogurt with splenda

I got tired of vanilla protein shakes or plain greek yogurt or plain cottage cheese, so I improvised...
I added dry sugar free jello or sugar free pudding (one box, would be split into 4 to 6 servings of either yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes etc....)  This changed up flavors and textures for me.  I also used flavorings/extracts which can be found in the cooking/baking isle, ie: almond, hazelnut, coconut, lemon, rum, spearmint

I also used my food processor a lot and pureed/whipped everything to make it creamy.   I also bought a pill crusher that pulverized my pills/vitamins, which made it easier for me to swallow in applesauce, and they didn't sit and lay in my new stomach.
