has anyone had ds surgery in canada
DS on 06/14/12
I am trying to find out if I can get this procedure done in Canada and if so where. I need to find out costs ect... if anyone knows any info please post or send PM. Thanks Barb
Dr Hong in Hamilton Ontario will do it under special cur****tances. You need to explain why you want to have this surgery. He will do it in one stage but sometimes does the VGS first then the second part next. I would suggest you post this question on the ontario board there are people who have had it done there and can answer more question and doctors.
Dr. Marceau and his group do the DS, they are in Laval, Quebec.
Dr. Gagner was doing the DS in Montreal, but he may not be there any longer. He's an excellent DS surgeon but he moves around a lot.
those are the only ones that I know of. For awhile, folks from Ontario were coming to the USA for the DS, but I don't think they can get it covered any more, which is a shame. I agree that someone on the Ontario board may be more helpful.

Which province do you live in? In Ontario you need to be referred to the Bariatric Registry and then go through an assessment process. If you're interested in DS the only Ontario Surgeon is Dr. Dennis Hong in Hamilton at St. Joseph's Healthcare. If he agrees you're a good candidate for DS, then you're covered.
It is covered in some other provinces and not others. There are DS surgeons in Quebec, and potentially one in NB and one that used to practise in one of the Prarie provinces. You would have to start with a referral from your family doctor to a surgeon's office for assessment. If you have to travel out of province, there may be special approval needed from the Ministry of Health beforehand.
