Revision from RNY to DS - your experience?

Original RNY in 2002 - lost about 100 lbs and stayed there for several years. A scope confirmed that my pouch was exactly the same size, but the original size was created 3 times larger than the norm. Soooo, revision to reduce the pouch size in 2008, lost nearly 100lbs...
Have had some big life changing things happen, divorce, several deaths, financial... and also was put on the pill for Anemia reasons.  I started gaining steadily and here I am with a 50lb regain and really struggling with exercise, getting enough protein in without getting 'stuck' and throwing up, feelings of defeat and failure are really taking a toll. I am scheduling an appt with my surgeon for an EGD to be done to see if there are any issues we are not aware of, I am very prone to adhesions and have had to have them removed a couple times.  If there is a reason for the doc to have to go back in there... perhaps a revision to DS may be a wise choice at this point. I would love to reach a healthy weight and be able to maintain a greater level of overall health.
Love to know your thoughts or experiences please, Lisa

I had anemia prior to my RNY in 2002.  My doc prescribe me an iron pill Chromagen Forte, and I take that with vitamin C to help absorb the iron.  My iron labs have been GOOD for years!!!!
Have you tried Vitalady.com???  She is a bariactric patient as well.  Her website, protein, and all vitamins are VERY, VERY good for us!!!!!!!!!!

Also, here is a list of RNY to DS surgeons..... there are under 10 in the united states!!!!

Dr. Keshishian, located in California

Dr. Rabkin, located in California

Dr. Stewart, located in Texas

Dr. Elariny, located in Virginia

Dr. Roslin, located in New York

Dr. Buchwald, located in Minnesota

Of course, the above doctors are in the United States

Dr. Gagner, located in Canada

Dr. Baltasar, located in Spain

Thanks Jamie!  Oh yes, I have been around here since 2001 so Michelle (Vitalady) has been a great source for me many times.  She is a wealth of wisdom!
I appreciate the surgeon info very much!

Lisa, I can't speak from personal experience as my DS was not a revision, but I can suggest that many of the DS veterans, including other RNY to DS revisions, are now more available on a different website, so you might be able to get more specific feedback there than here.
You can pm me if you want more details. I will say here that, as Jamie said, there are a limited number of surgeons who do this very complex surgery, and you will need to travel for sure. I will add that your surgeon, who does not do DS at all, is very unlikely to recommend it to anyone, and esp as a revision. More likely, unless some specific technical problem from your prior surgery is found, you will be blamed for noncompliance. It's very easy for both surgeons and insurers to make this accusation even without any evidence and even with RNY having a high failure rate (30% of gastric bypass patients fail to either lose or keep off at least 50% of their excess weight, which is the bariatric surgery world's rather generous definition of success).

Thank you Larra, I would like that info. on the other site as well.  I don't do anything without researching the hell out of it first, lol.  I am having a scope done on 4/24 and the surgeon is looking at the function of everything in there. I had to have Intussesception surgery last June and the insides still don't feel right.  We shall see....

Dr. Keshishian did my RNY to DS revision in 12/10. Jamie's right. You must pick your surgeon carefully because of the complexity of the procedure. Most of had to travel, it's worth it.

Something to keep in mind, generally the weight loss is slower and not as dramatic after this kind of revision,

Good luck on your journey.

Thanks! I see the necessity in choosing very wisely, it is a scary prospect to go under the knife again.

Hi,
I recently had a revision from RNY to DS with Dr. Stewart. I had the RNY in 2000, lost 150# and then regained 50# +/-. I struggled with other health issues with the RNY also. My surgery, recovery & weight loss has been great! I am early out, but would be happy to answer any questions if I can! Best wishes!
