Iron qestion

I just got my labs back and I truly don't have any idea

What I'm looking at.

My iron is 40 with the range being 35-175.My iron sat is 17% with range being 15-50.

Am I ok on iron or do I need to increase it? I'm so so tired right now and trying to figure out the cause.

Thanks for any input!!

40 is pretty low for iron. Did they run ferritin, hematocrit and hemoglobin as well? If too many of your iron markers are too low, you may be looking to get infusions, which is totally normal for DSrs and RNYrs since we have trouble absorbing iron.

When I was working to get my numbers up I was taking 300mg of Vitalady's Tender iron in the afternoons and 2 Proferrin ES tablets at bedtime.

Those levels may be high enough to bring back to life with good supplementation if you can't get infusions. Take a look at Vitalady's website for the Tender iron in capsule form and Proferrin ES. When you start taking iron start increasing the dosage slowly or it could make you sick (nauseous). Start week 1 with 1 capsule of Tender either at bedtime, or before breakfast, and 2 Proferrin ES tablets at another time. You're supposed to snap the Proferrin in half to help with absorption. They snap easily into 2 pieces...just take tablets in 4 pieces. Week two add another Tender capsule, week 3 another and so on until you're able to take 5 capsules.

You can also check into whether it's cheaper to get an Rx for Proferrin Forte instead of the OTC Proferrin ES. For me it was a lot cheaper but of course it depends on your Rx plan.

Good idea! I'll have to check my plan!
