How did you convince the surgeon for DS?

I have heard that you have to make a case for yourself to the Surgeon as to why DS is better for you (That's what I have hard in Ontario anyway)

Did you have to do that, and what did you say?

Some surgeons want to be absolutely certain that you know how to properly take care of yourself as a post-op patient.  By asserting yourself from the beginning, it shows that you will push to get the proper care that you need (and yes, you sometimes have to push with docs as a DS patient)

You are going to have the fight of your life if you want the DS done by OHIP. You need to go in there fully educated on why you need DS over RNY or VSG. They have only done DS on a select  few people in ontario but they seem to be doing more. The few that I have seen approved have very high BMI's well above 60 or have medical reasons on why the other 2 surgeries won't work for them. Learn everything you can about DS, knowledge is power and you will need it when you go in to meet your surgeon. Good luck edited to add go and spend as much time as you can on www.dsfacts.com and learn everything you can.

Thank you everyone! Well I don't know if I can make a good case for myself. These are the things I can come up with..

-BMI 50

-Type 2 Diabetes on maternal uncle, grandfather, and paternal aunt and grandfather

-Binge Eating Disorder (Concerned the restriction aspect of RNY will feed into the eating disorder) (I am in treatment now and learning that so much restriction makes you binge more)

-Heavy history of yo-yo dieting, (lost and regained 100 pounds 4 times-Im only 34) concerned about metabolism and my body fighting to keep its set weight (Another thing I have learned in treatment). I feel with the DS I have more of a change of long long term maintenance.

-I have been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)

I don't rely on NSAIDS. I have a bad back but am not on medication full time.

So what do you guys think of those reasons? Any good?

Do you have sleep apnea as well? or high Cholesterol those are both good or even if you are close to having them.  If your thyroid is off is another great reason as well if you can't get it right with meds. If you are pre diabetic as well.

Sorry but those reasons are not going to cut it for OHIP.

I highly doubt those would convince OHIP, sorry.  BTW, you will have restriction with a DS as well.  As I said in my other post, I suggest sending PatXYZ a PM for her recent experience.

I told him that that's what I wanted and he agreed. I didn't need to convince him, it didn't hurt that I did my homework and knew enough about it to sound like I could handle it.

She's currently in the hospital recovering from her DS on the 7th, but I would strongly suggest contacting PatXYZ on the Ontario forum for input!
