You cannot be eating steak at this point. What were you thinking ????

Stick to soft proteins and water.  SLOW DOWN.

Thank you I am doing better with soft protein and I think the answer to your question is I was not thinking.  I am going to the grocery store on my own for the first time tomorrow as every one else has been doing it for me.  I am also going to try to find a GNC and see if I can find a protein I am can stomach as I think that would be helpful.  Have a Good One Donna

I had a tough time the first few weeks out.  My surgeon told me the vitamins are not the most important the first few weeks, and that I could hold off on them.  Most important was to keep the fluids and protein coming in.  Even if it was at frequent, but small quantities.

Here are some food items that kept me going through it.

Whipped cottage cheese or small curd with sugar free jam (smuckers has a few good ones)
Plain greek yogurt with sugar free jam, or splenda

I also used dry sugar free jello(right out of the package, not prepared) and dry sugar free instant pudding to flavor the cottage cheese and greek yogurt.  Made the plain boring stuff taste a bit different and a variety.  I would mix in just a little bit, like a quarter of a teaspoon.  try it by your taste, start with a tiny bit, mix it up, taste it, and tweak it if you need to.

teaspoon of creamy peanut butter
mini meatballs (just a few) in broth ( would break up the meatballs in the broth)
Scrambled whole eggs
Egg Salad
Boneless skinless sardines (mushed up)
Tunafish salad (the creamier the better)
egg drop soup (my savior!)

I always tried new things by a teaspoon.  waited a while to see if it agreed with me.

Fluids:
Bottled Water
Green Tea decaf
Brewed fresh ginger with splenda (ginger settles stomachs)
Gatorade sugar free
Sugar free Arizona teas
Sugar Free Snapple
Sugar Free Hawaiin punch
Decaf Iced Coffee

I also added the sugar free jello and sugar free instand puddings into my vanilla protein shakes to change up flavors.  add the flavors a little at a time.

Try different temperatures in you fluids and foods.  Sometimes ice cold didn't agree with me, and too hot fluids bothered my stomach.

I was also taking prevacid 30 mgs twice a day.  I had really bad acid burps.  I don't think I could have gotten through it without the prevacid.

Best wishes to you.

I know when I first had the surgery, I was reading and re reading this board.  I got a lot of good support from here.  I appreciated it, especially when it worked for me.  I just couldn't talk to anyone in my family, they had no idea what I was going through and couldn't recommend anything for me.  The vets on here were always so helpful and always had such great ideas.

Hey Donna,

I haven't had my surgery yet, however, I was given information about my surgeons requirements for 2 weeks post operative.

Nausea/Vomiting:  Caused by eating or drinking too fast/overeating
Dehydration:  Caused by inadequate fluid intake, drink fluids between your protein supplements

General diet recommendations after surgery are:

60 grams of protein using liquid protein supplements....NO SOLID FOODS.

According to the RD's at my preop appointment, eating solids too quickly can cause severe pain, bloating, vomiting or possible leaks.   Your stomach needs to heal and it can take a good 4-6 weeks, if you eat too much too quickly you can have some serious issues.

I am worried that you're eating too much too quickly, please be careful and TAKE IT EASY, your still healing.

Best wishes!

Aundrea

Thank you.  I guess the down side of having the surgery out side of the USA is less educational material.
