Pain after Revision from RNY to DS

My surgery date is Feb 7 with Dr. Keshishian.  My RNY was open and I expect the DS will be as well.  I am terribly afraid of the pain when waking after the surgery.  I know there will be pain, but how much pain did you have when you awoke?  I want to be as mentally prepared as possible.
Thanks so much for your help.

 Hi,

I wasn't a revision from RNY, mine was lap band and a previous old fashioned stomach stapling. The answer is no-one knows your pain threshold. I think you've had a baby, so your pain threshold may be high.

But, guess what? Pain meds are your friends, take them often and on time. If you are supposed to take them 4 hourly, take them 4 hourly, don't wait til you are in agony. In hospital, they will take care of your pain management.

You will be fine, good wishes for a very speedy recovery.

Thank you for your reply!  I did not have three children in the days before epidural drips plus I have had several surgeries.  That is why I am so afraid...I have a terribly low pain threshold.  I don't mind so much the pain during the recovery because you can control that. it is the pain when you first wake up that has me shaking.  Hope my anesthesiologist believes me when I tell them how low my pain threshold is.

By-the-way, you look amazing, love your hair.  Did you experience much hair loss?

Also, love your poodles.  I also would love to have a red poodle--only a toy size.

Truly, I didn't have any pain when I first woke up, just a feeling of heaviness. I was in and out of consciousness for a couple of hours. It wasn't till quite a few hours after the surgery, when I tried to move it was ouchie, but very manageable with pain relief meds.

Thank you for the compliments about my hair, it is ridiculously thick, the small amount of hair loss I had was great while it lasted (about 6 months). When it's long it takes forever to dry, and I can't be bothered to blow dry it. So, once a year I shave it off to a #3 clipper to raise money for the Leukemia Shave for Cure appeal. It's a win/win situation.

Once again, best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Dr K has an awesome reputation. Just let them know if you are in pain. They will assist from what I have heard. Hopefully some of his patients will speak up

I did not have a lot of pain post-op. Dr Maguire uses the On Q pain ball. see here  http://www.iflo.com/prod_onq_classic.php   Not sure if Dr K uses it or not. It is commonly used in many surgeries

Thanks for your reply.  The pain ball sounds amazing so I researched it and turns out my insurance does not pay for it, but I am definitely going to talk to Dr. K about it.  Thanks again for the info.

Dr. K did my RNY to DS revision 13 months ago and yes, it'll be open.

Speaking from my experience, the pain management was excellent. I literally have very few memories of the first 24 hours and the whole first week is pretty hazy.

You'll do just fine.

Hey there! Congrats on the upcoming DS date!

When I woke I was uncomfortable. My pain was well controlled by pain meds. Make sure you let them know if you need more meds. It's going to hurt but it fades soon. Mine was open, also, BTW! Good luck. The benefits of the DS are so worth the pain.
