Potassium redux

I spoke with my PCP who said she would monitor my potassium but to stay away from green leafy veggies since it counteracts coumadin.  Ok.  I guess I do this on my own, I need to call my surgeon.

I looked at what I was eating since my surgery.  Thank God for myfitnesslady.  I'm averaging 300-500 mg of potassium a day.  I used to get a bit over 1500.  Add malabsorbtion to that and I think we have our answer.

I know the recommended is around 4000 mg of Potassium but I couldn't find the minimum acceptable...anyone know?

I think the minimum for adults is 1600-2000 mg a day. We do not malabsorb potassium (or sodium for that matter), but our modified diet will naturally drop our intake per day, especially early on post-op.

Keep monitoring it with your PCP. Drug interactions that cause high sodium can wack out potassium as well. Stay vilgilent!

I add potassium to my diet via salt substitue which is just potassium.  There is a lot more in 1/4 tsp of salt substitue than in OTC potassium pills but I also take those.  My levels are "normal" but without the added potassium I get horrible foot cramps at night.  The added potassium really helps me.

Well do what you need to do but I refused to eat all those carbs to get my potassium when I was trying to lose weight.

I eat bananas now but I sure didn't when I was losing.

YMMV.

Just for info, a med banana is about 27 carbs and a large is about 31 carbs and fills up space you need for protein. But, do what you need to to at this point. (not meaning to sound critical)

No, the bananas aren't the end of the world and I think Gina doest the V8. How low is your potassium? Why are you on coumadin?

for what it is worth, my diabetes educator told me a half banana is 15 g of carbs.
