Ok I saw the hematologist today and he wants me to get an iron infusion.  I got it set up for this thursday and I was told it would be infused over 4-6 hours.  Is there anything I should know besides the fact I am going to be bored out of my skull :)

I just recently had infusions. I had Ferehem (feraheme)sp. It was easy. 1 1/2hrs start to finish. Better absorbed according to my hemo and very small risk of side affects.

Take lots of stuff with you to keep yourself busy! And take your water and snacks with you as well.

Bring a book or work with you. There may be a TV in the infusion clinic (the one I went to had TV). I always brought snacks/food as well.

Think I am going to end up kidnapping my hubby's laptop and using that to keep me occupied. Thanks for mentioning snacks and drinks I never even thought of it, but I do remember the gal telling me that they do have some of that there for patients to have. From what they wrote on the card looks like I am going to be getting Iron Dextran for the infusion. Anyone had that type of iron???

I would skip the 4 hr visits 5 times and have your surgeon set you up an appointment with a hematologist and have them give you fereheme iron. It only takes 1 hour start to finish and you only have to do it 2 times, sometimes 1 time if your iron isn't way too low. That's what I had a couple of months ago and I just had my levels checked and they're great still. Saved me a lot of time and a lot of unnecessary pain from 5 IVs over the course of 5 weeks.
