Just moved to soft foods... any recommendations, wisdom?

Hi, all.  Just moved to soft food diet today.  I'm looking for recommendations, words of wisdom, etc.  In reading several postings, I am seeing that DSers eat much more fat than I thought was good and hardly any carbs... when does that start?  3 mos, 6 mos out?  Dietician's diet consistenly states low fat and no sugar.  I'd appreciate your input!

Thanks!
Diana

Hi Hun! We have the same surgeon so i know you will find some of the things your NUT told you are for gastric by pass and not DS.

i questioned her constantly about things like lowfat. She said it was because of the increased bowel movement so really if you dont have a problem in that dept why in the heck would you drop the fat! now dont get me wrong, im still on liquids so for me its liquids in liquids out but ive been using full fat on most things with no apparent issue so far.

I also asked her why we would add in grains since those are most likely to give us gas and bloat and slow our weight loss...she didnt have a good answer for that. Only that that should be the lastg thing you eat.

Hopefully some vets will chime in but ive been on this board since May and i will say fat is good...breads, pasta, rice and other simple carbs are not.

I believe most DSer stay below 50 carbs in the first 2 yrs to make sure they loss the most during their window:)

Also, pay close attention to your vitamins. Dr. Smith regiment is nowhere near sufficent for how much we malabsorb. I HIGHLY recommend you checking out vitalady.com, if you havent already:)

Now mushies that i will be eating? egg salad with reg mayo, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, refried beans with cheese and chobani (plain chobani tastes like sour cream but with more protein!) pudding, yogurt...i know there are a ton more options but im not to mushies yet so thats all i could think of:)

Good luck, you are so lucky to be on mushies! i have 2 weeks left of liquids:( UGH!!!

Hi, Jennifer.  Wow, you went a ways to have Dr. Smith.  I like the doc and the team.  I'm surprised, however, at how off the dietician and vitamin requirements were stated.  That doesn't sit well.

It actually makes sense re the fat... with malabsorption and that I believe that if the body is deprived of fat it will try to store it.  Also re the grains/carbs.  I haven't eaten any yet so I guess I'm on the right track there.

I will definitely check out Vitalady's recommendations.  I have been taking the 2 MVs, 3 calcium and 3 ADEK-Multi every day since I've been home so I'm hopefully not too far off.  Will check specifics against Vitalady.

Hang in there on the liquids...  You're not too far behind me!

Best of luck to you, too!

Ignore your nutritionists. That info is for VSG and RNY patients. You will also likely get totally insufficient recommendations on the vitamin and protein supplementation you will need FOR LIFE.

You have much to learn so start reading old posts.

Here's a good link for DSfacts.com on what to eat by how far out you are.  www.dsfacts.com/Post-Op-Eating.html

I ate a lot of full fat cottage cheese , refried beans with cheese on top, plain Greek yogurt flavored with either sugar free syrups or sugar free pudding mix, protein shakes.
My surgeon gave us a recipe for no noodle lasagna that was good.  It's 3/4 cup cottage cheese, 1/4 cup spaghetti sauce, an egg and Italian seasonings.  You mix it all together and then bake it for 30 minutes at 350.  Then top with Parmesan cheese.

Wow, all!  So much good information and SO much different than the nutritionist said.  Thank you for chiming in.  I now have a much better idea of what I need to focus on.

I am still trying to determine if I am lactose intolerant.  At 1.5 weeks out from surgery, I started getting huge amounts of gas.  It has tapered off, I believe, because I have started drinking Muscle Milk shakes (lactose free) rather than the Optisource, EAS and Unjury.  I am also not eating greek yogurt (bummer for me cause I like it) or using milk products.  I am still playing with this so I'm not positive whey protein (comes from milk) or dairy is the issue.  I am seriously hoping it's not because I so like cheese, yogurt, milk products.

I appreciate all of the input... you all are wonderful support!

You might give the yogurt a try. Many people who have lactose intolerance are ok with yogurt and cheese.

Yeah usually cultured milks (ie: cheese, yogurt) are fine for people who are lactose intolerant.  I can't tolerate regular milk right now either, but cheese and yogurt are fine!

Yeah, it's a shame that the Nutritionists aren't better informed about the DS.  I just had my pre-op class, and the actual food/vitamin portion wasn't very good.  But, we have this wonderful board and advice from the vets to help us through instead!  How lucky!

I read dsfacts.com several times.  There's a ton of info there.  There are other sites with recipes, like theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com.  She had an RNY, but for the mushies phase, she has some good ideas.  Also, other various ways of doing up your protein shakes.

Definitely check out Vitalady.com for your starting vitamin schedule, and the suggested labs (also found on this forum).  It's important to be sure that you're getting the correct supplements in.

Hope this helps some.  I am sure there are plenty of other websites that can be suggested.

Best of luck!
