Ferritin 15 pre-op

I'll call them in the morning and talk to the doctor.  It was the nurse that called me, not the doc.  She seemed to think that 15 was fine since it falls into range.  I'll push for an infusion.  Can they give me that thru the IV once I'm in recovery?  Can you get iron injections instead of thru IV's?  I've never had to have one before.  Thanks!

There are iron injectiions but they are not as effective and can leave huge stains at the injection site that do not go away. Iron is usually done IV and could be done post-op. They test you first to make sure you won't have a reaction. I would ask them to give you benadryl first.

If you meant will they do it in the recovery room? I don't think so, what if you did have a reaction right out of surgery?  If you meant post-op, yeah, they can do it then.

Ewwww stains don't sound appealing at all.  I mean before I leave the hospital after surgery while I still have the IV in.  Maybe that's too soon after.  I've taken iron supplements before, but never had an infusion.  I was slightly anemic during my pregnancies.

Can you go to a hemotalogist? I've heard anything under 40 gets an infustion. I didn't like my lab work and I asked my pcp office who they referred to a hemotalogist and they asked me who is referring me, I said my insurance doesnt' require it, they gave me the number and I faxed my own lab work. The hemotalogist was much more knowledgable and it so happened my ferritin went from 60s to 90s on its own. The only thing I can tell I did different was drink cheap bottle water. So I'm thinking its really tap water. lol. It got my ferritin up. lol.
