Upcoming Health Fair Blood Draw...Should I get the D screen?

My area has a health fair every 6 months where they draw blood and run a bunch of labs for $35.  I'm definitely going because even though it probably won't do everything I need (hopefully you guys can help me with that part when I get the results) it will tell me quite a bit.  What I'm wondering is this year they are offering what they call a Vitamin D screen for an extra $45.  Is this something you guys think I should go ahead and have done as well?

Thanks in advance,
Dawn

You could. You're likely low like most of us pre-op. Do you have insurance that will cover your labs in the future?

I do have insurance but I'm not sure if they will pay for it.  It will depend on how the doctor words it/codes it.  If they are doing it only because of my WLS then my insurance will not cover it, if they are doing labs for other reasons then they will pay for it.

Tell your doc to use this code:

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis Code 579.9 Unspecified intestinal malabsorption

Since a full set of labs runs anywhere from $1200 UP, you really want your insurance to pay.

If it includes the D 25 hydroxy, it's worth it. The D test I carry is $67 and tests all the fractions of D.

But if it's D2 or D 1,25, don't pay for it. Worth nothing to you

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

Well, my insurance covers my labs 100% so I wouldn't personally do it, but if your coninsurance would leave you with a greater charge than that...it would be worth it.  However, most people have a coinsurance or lab copay less than that.

I'm leaning towards it probably not being cost effective for you...but it really depends on your plan.
