Hurricane Tips for Neophytes
Too funny! And TRUE!
I was laughing with a friend last night about how you can tell who the tv stations consider redundant by where they assign them. Poor Clyde Ferber, the last human stranded in Buxton reporting from where the ocean is breaching to the sound is NOT going to be on the anchor desk any time soon.

Oh! Oh! Oh! I thought of another one!
Plan ahead so you don't have to eat ALL the ice cream sandwiches in one day in order to "save" them! *burp*

Having just been through Irene, I will add one more. If the winds really start to pick up, and you have an outdoor AC unit, turn it off. The rotation of the winds conflict with the fan rotation and can burn out your motor. Happened to 4 houses on my street, all built within the last 6 months.
Also, heed the ATM advice. Not one place has electricity or internet in town so cash only.
Just because the storm has passed, particularly if you are the coast like me, don't assume it's "over". Storm surges can still cause serious flooding.
Also, put all important documents and IDs in a water tight plastic bag and keep with you either in the safe room or the attic if flooding begins.
And don't forget to move the "little things" like tree branches that are down in the woods nearby. They became like cannonballs flying down the street. Signs for your security system (This house protected by Brinks, etc), lights staked in the ground, anything like this can become a deadly projectile.
Best of luck to all my northern friends with Irene. Praying for you!

Glad you seem to have made it through in one piece. It just left us, but the winds are still major and they are still worried about surge even though the tide is on the way out.
Luckily for those up north, it has downgraded to a level 1. The problem remains that it is HUGE and moving slowly. Still capable of lots of damage.
